Heres a couple pics of my 55 to give you some ideas. Nothin crazy, just cleaned things up a bit. I'm now running chrome o.e.m. style wheels on it. Youve got a great start already!

  2. I see you behind the wheel, literally and designily. If she could find a '55 Pontiache bumper, like mentioned, that'd work. The grills look the same to me.

  3. NICE CLEAN WAGON!!!Nice stance too.

40 Stude, We (she likes your reasoning). The wheels are not going to look like ralley's, they will be black with the bullet push through. I think the bumper was the big question. I'd like to put a 55 bumper with 56 bullets on it. The bumper and the chrome grill surround get real expensive. Thanks for everyone's feedback. Jack

  10. Chrome reverse, forget the bumper. It's cool like it is. Complete with smiling wife!

I quoted Jay's post because his car is a really fine example of how to do one of these in a 50's traditional style. The first thing to notice on Jay's car is the paint. It's a bold color, with a white top. There is a reason that most of these were sold new with a white top. These are big cars and the top is huge and bulbous. So, anything you can do to pull your eye away from the top helps. I would highly recommend that you reconsider the red flaked top on this car. Flaked tops are great, but this is just the wrong car. It would look like a VW camper bus. Tell the wife it's a "does this make my butt look big?" thing.

The only thing on your wife's car that looks bad as it sits is the front end and wheels. If you like the grill insert, fine, but the blacked out grill surround is an early mullet era design that just has to go. Obviously done by the same individual that thought the rally wheels looked good. The bumper needs to be stock, unless you are going to do additional extensive custom work. Just fixing the grill surround and bumper will make a huge improvement in this car, but a custom grill insert will never look correct unless you shave that hood.

For wheels and tires, most anything pre '60 will look good. Astros and Radirs look great on these, but don't really fit the bill unless the car is getting considerable custom/paint mods. The wheels on Jay's make a great total package on his mild custom. Chrome reverse w/baby moons/www would look great too.

I also vote for losing the pipes. Again, just the wrong car. With it's flared rockers, it just doesn't flow.

    Good luck! great car!!
