Technical DeSoto 6-12V conversion

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Stephen Lovelady, Jul 30, 2017.

  1. I'm toying with the idea of converting my 52 DeSoto Firedome from 6 to 12V as I did in a 39 Dodge D11 when I did a full re-wire. At the time 12V was most convenient as I added some modern touches to it.

Now I've this 52 DeSoto Firedome with the 276 Hemi low deck and the M^ semi-auto transmission. My issues in hesitating are two fold. 1) The power steering is driven off the back of the generator and 2) The semi-automatic utilizes 6V electrics for the solenoid, governor, and kick down at the Carter 884S carburetor. ( another story for later ).

I've found a kit from Vintage Auto Garage with one specific to Autolite generators. It includes field coils, brushes, bushings, a bearing, brush holders, etc... as well as a voltage regulator for a little over $200.

Has anyone ever used this kit? If so, what was your experience? Any thoughts as to this change?

Sounds like a plan - have you looked into a 8 volt battery ? You can find them around and a stock 6 volt generator can be easily set up for it.

Put two 6 volt batteries in series and use only one for the M6 semi automatic, wiper motor, heater motor. Either find a 12 volt generator that will mount the ps pump behind it, or have your old one rewound for 12 volts. Radio may have to be modified to 12 volt neg ground.
