I fired up the hemi last night for the first time since I've had it back from the machine shop. I have a Hot Heads GM manual adapter on it with a small block Mopar mini starter. It fired right up but the teeth of the starter are sticking in the flywheel while its running causing an awesome blower whine sound. (Not really awesome). Is there any way to shim these starters? I've read there isn't. I can see a witness mark on the flywheel already from it. Thanks guys.
If it is too deep into the ring then it doesn't speak well for the adapter... You can move the starter away from the ring by hitting the bolt holes with a round file. If the adapter has a pocket for the starter nose then you can remove some material from the side of the nose. Take off only what is necessary. .
Is your flex plate on the right way, turning it around could move the rimg gear an 1/8" closer to the trans and away from the starter. if you are running a flywheel then that wont work... Also try and bench test the starter to make sure its returning the gear all the way back. Sometimes the solenoid is janky and it wont pull the gear back all the way.
