I was gonna start a thread soon for my Desoto build,,,,but that has been side tracked for now,,lack of money and all from this stay at home thing .
I was supposed to take my block next week to the machine shop for a .020 bore and have it decked,,,,but,,,I can’t justify spending right now for something I don’t really need at the moment,,,,no problem,,,do it later .
Anyway,,,,, I thought I might as well do some of the nasty stuff that has be done later,,,,and just do it now .
These rockers have been under my bench for over 11 years,,,,,they are original to my engine,,,,so they might give some insight to the overall condition of it .

These were really dirty and grimy,,,,but looked decent enough.
I marked the shafts with a stamp I.d. to keep them in order .
After I got them apart,,,I was pleasantly surprised to see the lack of wear on the shafts .
They mic about .001-.0015 wear .
I’m very glad and will do a good polish in a lathe when I get back to the plant .
The intake shafts mic’d no more than .001,,,the exhaust mic’d right at .0015 .
I ***ume because they are the last of the line in the oil system,,,,,exhaust gets the oil last .
The inside of the intake shafts were about 50 % clogged with gunk and sludge .
The p***enger exhaust shaft was about 75 % clogged,,,,the driver exhaust shaft was almost 100 % clogged,,,,I couldn’t see any daylight through it,,,but it had to have some flow,,,otherwise the rockers and shaft would be burnt up .
Also,,,the drivers side is the end of the line for oil flow,,,,so all the dirt naturally will end up there .
I will post these again in the future when I really do the build,,,but,,,I thought it might help relieve the boredom.
Maybe,,it will give someone an incentive to remember this when they build any engine with rocker shafts ,,,it’s an important aspect that shouldn’t be overlooked .

Anyway,,,,I’m lost when it comes to building a ch***is,,,though I plan to in the future,,,,finances just won’t allow it now,,,,no tears from me,,,LoL .

Okay guys,,,at least I can offer some insight into engines .
I’m not a professional,,,nor do I claim to be,,,,but I try to offer good advice,,,,and help the low buck guys all I can.

Those early Hemi's didn't send much oil to the top end, just a little shot every two crank revolutions, when the oiling holes on the cam journals lined up with the hole in the cam bearing. I've heard of folks cutting a groove around the inside cir***ference of the cam bearing in order to provide continuous oiling, although with good pressure and today's good oils it shouldn't be necessary..

FYI, the drivers side of the engine is no further toward the end of the oiling line than is the p***enger side. They are both equal as far as oil delivery.

  3. Not when you look at the galleys,,,,,oil comes from the pump down the p***enger bank,,,,feeds the p***enger lifters ,, rockers,,and the front 4 mains,,,the cam journals have a feed p***age from each of them.
The front main also feeds the drivers bank galley,,,,then it flows back to the lifters there and the feed galley for the drivers side rockers .
The rear main has its own dedicated galley from the pump that feeds the main bearing and the rear cam journal,,and the number 8 rod .
What I meant was that there really is no where for the oil to bleed off from the exhaust side rockers shaft . After shutting the engine down,,,the heavy particles will settle there and solidify.
And because of that,,,all of the junk and buildup in the oil settles in those shafts .
With the shafts capped off,,,the dirt has to settle there,,,at least it stands to reason I think ?
That is why I posted this ,,,,hoping to get some interaction,,,,Thanks old buddy !

If nothing else, it's a good reminder to clean out the shafts!

  5. Here are some pics of the intake rockers after cleaning .
Turned out really well,,,and only have minimal wear on the pads and the I.d. Bore .
The pads should only need some polishing with Scotchbrite to be in very usable condition .
The I.d. Only mics about a half a thousandth wear or less,,,very nice so far .

The arrow points to the inside where the p***age connects to the I.d.
I am showing this for a reason,,,these must be checked that they are clean and open . These are not pressure fed and rely completely on what residual oil they can get from the rocker bore .
I had three that were closed off almost completely.
There was a burr blocking the opening,,,,I had to run a drill through it to remove the metal .
    Other than that,,,great .

These are pressure fed,,,they actually have an extra hole in the shaft that feeds this area .
The arrow points to the hole in the center,,,when it is clean,,,you can see the bit in the hole,,,,this shows the area is perfectly clean and will flow lube to the pushrod tip .
Make certain these are open .

Maybe these pics will help give some guys something to double check if ever they build one themselves .

I spent quite a while on the 330's arms. Like yours they were disgusting inside. Someone had polished them all up pretty on the outside but hadn't taken the plugs out and cleaned them. Great info here!
