Detroit is awesome. I've been almost every year for the past decade. Huge. And the basement at Cobo blows the Suede Palace out of the water.

But overall, GNRS is at another level. The layout, the builders, the overall atmosphere. That's not a knock on Detroit, but GNRS rules.

The basement at the Autorama is a great time. While I really do go to car shows for the cars it's the people that make the basement awesome!

I'd love to go to GNRS someday. I think the quality of the show might be better but I'd have more fun at the D just because of the people.

This is a loaded question. Like Would you buy a power boat, or a sail boat?

Enjoy apple juice or orange juice....

I admit I have never been to the roadster show, but a few buddys go every year, and bring back pics and videos sent while they are there. It looks like no other show in the world I have seen or been to.

I have been to Cobo a few times, and it is Fantastic as well. To me a very different show, neither are in the same arena.

SO I have both on my list of things to do or continue doing.

  9. Seriously, Dude?
So then tell me why I dropped in on the father's day show at Pomona the year after Chip's Ridler Winner "Impression" won the Ridler and the owner was driving it all over the fairgrounds and to and from the show - Some of those cars don't see many miles - for sure, but "never see the street" is not a safe statement to make on here. Meanwhile, don't come to the D and call any of those cars down stairs "ratrods".. Those are mostly traditional hot rods and customs. granted a couple are actual "rat Rods", but most are NOT. You will be ghetto food if you call some of those cars rat rods - Welcome to Detroit. Don't agree? Come see on March 8 - 10 for yourself... Best winter time fun a hot rodder can have anywhere is in Detroit!

Two totally different shows, two different ends of the country,... Both have pluses and minuses They are both steeped deep in Hot Rodding history..... Pick one or both and enjoy your time there,....

There is no positive purpose to this thread,... and can only end in a lot of stupid opinions and negative comments thrown at one show or the other. I am in the MHRA and we have put on the Detroit Autorama with CASI from the beginning in 1953,... My loyalities belong with the Detroit Autorama,... But The GNRS (Or "Oakland" as it was known for many years) has it's own merits. Both are fantastic shows.

Attend both if you can, you will truly enjoy them.... Or pick one that means the most to you. But lets not get suckered into a pissing contest on which one is best.... IMHO

What "New Criteria" ????????? The only Criteria change has happened at the GNRS,... Not Autorama. And it was changed because the Riddler cars and the Great 8 cars were going to compete at the following GNRS after they were shown at Autorama.

Autorama cause well… it's Detroit. If you didn't have Detroit, you wouldn't have the GNRS!!! We're not the Motor City for nothing, it's what we do.

I'm sorry you feel that way... I f you had read my question at the beginning of this thread you will see that I didn't ask which show was best, all I wanted to know was why you would pick one over the other. You may think this is a pissing contest and you are entitled to your own opinions but as the originator of this thread I have learned a lot from the majority of the replies and I thank all of you for them.

    Ron,

That's why I put the "IMHO" at the end,..... Your OP was fine, but a lot of guys take this kind of a thread to get a little pissy and throw there opinions around to take digs at one show or another. And again..... That's my opinion,.... Either way, I would really like to run into you at Autorama,... But the hours I keep down there usually don't work so well for socializing.

I agree... I'm looking at the Woodward Roadster, Kirkegaard Merc, Victoria Secret, and John Mumfords T on the HAMB and wishing I was able to see them at GNRS... and I'm sure others will be viewing posts on the Autorama with the same amount of enthusiasm...
