Just got a Detroit Racing Equipment 2x2 intake for a Caddy/Stude. Never heard of them before this. Anybody got any clues to what they made? When they were around. Company logo?? Thanks Clark
I don't believe they made anything other than Cadillac and Olds equipment. I've seen a dual quad intake for Cadillac, and I used to have a 2X2 for early Cadillac, but sold it, like a fool. They used to run small ads in the back pages of Hot Rod in the '53-'54 era.
Heathen..thanks! I guess I'll have to find an old Hor Rod and look up the add. Rudy..I'll take a pic for you. It had Detroit racing equip. spelled out on the sides of the intake and the linkage has DRE stamped into it. Clark
hey hoser.. hope you didnt pay too much.. the may 1950 HOT rod has this adverti*****t on page 8.. they were only 65.00..
Looks very similar to the Edmonds that I saw on my friends Mopar 3 window coupe in the Ba*****t at cobo, it was the one with all the louvers and the Curtis nose.
Rudy..I love that car! Sawzall...thanks! Benzine..It's for a Caddy but is supposed to work on a Stude with a little modification. Clark
They did some marine use stuff too I think. I have seen intakes that have been built with really thick carb bases and I have have seen them mill on angle. I have pictures of both the 2-2bbl and 2-4bbl. Marshall has one, and Jerry in Seattle with the 34 sedan has one. I think that they are a fairly rare, but they do come up several times a year on ebay. I can post some pics if needed.
Here are the 2-2bbl version. I have a scan with a really cool ad with horse heads, but I can't remember which disc I have it on.
I've mocked my Stude Edmunds on a Caddy. I just gotta drill one hole and make one 'washer' out of a thick piece of strap.
Hey, Read the fine print where it says designed by Frank Burrell, so in all actuality this is a late ohv Cad intake made by Frank Burrell of the Flathead Cad 2x2 Burrell intake fame. That's cool!!!!!!! I've been emailing Franks son Barry re:the continuation of production of the Flathead Cad intake. Infact just today did I email jpgs of the tooling to a foundry that I use to see if they can help Barry out and quote him a good price for a run of 10-20 or so. Did ya guys see Savage's 6 carb intakes I had those done @ the same place and it seems that he is very happy with the quality of the casting that he recieves. I have seen these before but I never knew who was responsible for them. Thanx again guys for the education Kevin
Seymour..that's the set up I bought. Carbs are junk and the back flame arrestor is pitted pretty bad. It is cool that the linkage is still there. Thanks for all the info!! I'd like to see the scan with the horses. Clark
I actually just spent way above my budget and bought a complete Detroit Racing Equipment 2x4 Cadillac setup off e-slay, complete with manifold, two 4 barrel Stromberg 94 carbs, linkage, air filter setup, fuel regulator, lines, etc. Will send pics when i rebuild the whole setup and install. To go along with this, i'm also building my own headers, and putting on some other vintage dress up parts that i have. All going on my '60 CDV project. I'm pretty excited as I get things together. -scott noteboom
Scott...cool! Pics are a must! My motor is in storage. I can't wait to get it home and sit the intake on. Clark
Never heard of it before this post...did a little poking around, here's what it is seems to be today: http://mymovingpages.com/Enterprise+Rent-A-Car+-+Hamtramck.327671.10838199.home.html Guess they aren't in business anymore
Hah... I was gonna bid on that, but I had just bought 2 overpriced intakes last week, so I p***ed. Who on here beat me to the overpriced 2x2 for $650?? I came home to hit buy now, and someone else did it like 10 mins before me.
Bring'in this thread back to the top. I recently bought a similiar set-up with carbs and linkage. Carbs need a rebuild but are decent cores. Anybody actually running them regularly?
Here is an what is believed an experimental early set up for a flathead and it can be seen in person on 2018 Amelia Island Concours showfield:
Found this: "Cadillac’s Experimental Garage was conducting a lot of high performance engine development during this time period. Special grind roller cams by Dunn, and multi carb intakes by Detroit Racing Equipment were routinely being tested. Reports indicated 7,000 rpm capabilities. Remember we are talking 1950! Frank’s experience had elevated him to head of the Engineering Garage, and he became the official liaison to anyone using Cadillac engines for high performance use. Cadillac even published spec sheets for modifying Hydramatic transmissions and building high performance engines."
