a bunch of us showed up at hot rod garage for lunch thursday...jason took me in his HIGHboy roadster...fun ride. it's got a later flathead mated to an all original ch***is, with undropped big-beam and reversed springs at both ends...got me to thinking about a 3w HIGHboy. i searched for hours yesterday for pics of some, and could only find a few...any of you got some more?
sorry guys...shoulda made myself more clear. I'm looking for pics of unchopped cars with undropped axles...hence the name HIGHboy. thanks for the effort though...
Best 3W I ever saw was your old car Larry. Maybe some day you can do it again. All it takes is money.
I always thought highboy meant that the body was on top of the frame and not channeled. I didn't think it had anything to do with the chop or axle.
Larry, you set the bar real high with your last one. Maybe you should think about a nice HIBOY sedan with lots of comfort for you and the wife. The above picture of Chris Unger's 3 window has the look but would not be a good road car. Build us a high end sedan.
Larry, I snagged this from a thread on wicked set-back engines - it is, in my opinion, the best looking unchopped '32 3W highboy ever. And the engine set-back ain't bad either . . . Oops - just noticed it's channeled so not a highboy afterall Oh well, still looks great with the uncut top. Steve
In California a highboy is a fenderless not channeled hotrod, has nothing to do with the front axle. The best thing I ever did to my '32 3W was chop the top. Corrected a terrible design error by Ford, Ha Ha. Good luck on your quest, maybe Bruce will tempt you again, hang on to the next one. The FOGGER
You are totally correct...I normally spell it as hiboy, but I intentionally spelled it HIGHboy because I like the look of the total height of the whole package with an unchopped top and an undropped axle. I don't like the really high look of simply unbolting the fenders and running as stock. You gotta drop it some front and rear a little by playing with the crossmembers and springs, and using 5.50x16 front tires with 7.50x16 rears... ala Rudy...
Totally works with a roadster. I just don't like unchopped coupes - 3windows especially. And both pics Deuce Roadster posted have dropped axles.
CHOP IT!(but not a ton), ***flathead***, no hood, 6.00x16 fronts 7.00x16 backs, stock springs with a couple leaves removed and reversed eyes.... banjo rear - 3sp trans call it a day something like this...(photoshop) this is probably more what you want though?
( flipping back and forth from pic to pic )...damnit zach, now I can't make up my mind. I think I'd take either one, but make a couple changes... ...lose the stock headlights and install guide 903j's ...lose the cowl lights ...put 5.50x16's on the front instead of the 6.00's That top chop looks to be about 3"...not bad... I was also gonna run a hood, but hoodless with a flattie... hmmm.
the cowl on a 3 window seems to turn up funny at the front... to me for some reason when they sit high the lines don't look right... a 5 window flows better with the hood just opinion though... cowl lights should go... i was ina rush just to chop the top quick for you... headlights with no marker lights ontop, but a little smaller would look good im sure you'll make it cool!
