The gussets are brilliant! My '27 T Roadster build: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t= 734383
I have a similar unit in my frame. At the time I installed it, 1975, It was bought in LA from Pauls Street Rods. Boy does it stiffen up the frame, No flex at all. A big plus is if you make louvered panels to go from the X member to the frame it will hide coolers and fuel pumps ETC. Makes the underside of the car really clean.
OK, some progress...one oval hole done. Which lead to a pair of legs with holes... And they fit 2 1/4" exhaust easily. Not that I'm necessarily going to use tube that big, but it fits. Actually 2 1/2 would squeak through. Jimmy, I want to be there, time will tell!
Looks like it should. How did you make the beveled ovals in the X-member....A die stamp or hammered in? I love the look and it sure would strengthen the ch***is.
They started as two regular holes. I cut the excess between them and made a tool to clamp behind and banged the flanges over to marry the two holes into one. A little t******* and job done, as seen above. A fellow who goes by Oztinbasher on here made a hole belling tool the size I wanted and I went over to his place and we pressed the bells in. Brought it home and did the rest. I must say, there is a lot of mucking around and time consumed doing this stuff. A bunch of tubes would be way faster! But then...
Ok, here's an update...the frame is out of the jig. Still needs a few things, as well as engine and transmission mounts. The rear crossmember is just a temp. And the view from below... Pretty happy with the way this one's turned out so far.
Looks great Tony! My '27 T Roadster build: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t= 734383
Wow Tony, that turned out incredible! But considering you built it, that's no surprise. My '27 T Roadster build: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t= 734383
I love the design but was wondering if you can run the exhaust pipes through the front hole in the x-member or would you have to run it under the x? On the bending of the channel pieces, did you have to add a piece back in once bent to shape? Nice work and a little different from most.
There's a pic on page two of 2 1/4" tube going through one of the oval holes. Plenty of room. No way would I run exhaust under a frame that's already 6 inches deep! I did cut and add some material when forming the bends in the channel. I appreciate the feedback fellas.
Tony, that's about as nice a deuce frame as I've ever seen! Gorgeous work. Is it possible to see a couple of closeup photos of the areas with rivets?
Nice job, after it's finished you almost don't want to put a body on the ch***is and cover up all your great work!
I missed this thread first time around. Frame looks great. I love the small gussets. @X38 The photo of how you made them seems to be gone, I would love to see your solution to that.
