Alright fellas, getting stuff together to fab up a hood top for the RPU and am planning on using a '32 center hinge. I've looked at the hood hinge strips shown below, but they don't look right...I'd either have to cut the outer 90* face off or add a 90* 'flange' to my hood in order to get them to work. At this point, I think it would be easier to put the correct bends in the hood myself, but I need some measurements...anyone got a '32 hood laying around they could grab the following dimensions off (a, b, c, d, and e)? At this point, even a 'ballpark' would be a huge help.
Who makes the part in the photo? I can measure a hood top on Tuesday if you don't get the info sooner. Bob
The issue with those Dale's hinges is that they require a 90* flange on the hood pieces. I was hoping to avoid that. Here's a pic of a gennie 32 hood (laying on its top) for comparison;
G: What you have pictured looks correct to me. I used a Rootlieb repair kit on my 34 hood and it looked just like that. I cut the old hinge off and laid the hood on top of the flange and glued 'er back together. Sounds simpler than it was but it works. Everyone remember this...if you buy a rootlieb kit you must use their hinge also. Tim
Thanks Tim, just for clarification, the rootlieb kit looks like the gennie hood pictured in post 5? Mind if I ask what they charge?
Here is a quick mock up of the pictured hinge, and yes it would need a 90 deg. bend on the hood halves.
Thanks Bob, that helps me visualize it better. That might be a good option...I guess I'm just curious if genuine '32 hoods were done this way.
Pretty sure that those hinges are meant to be used flat with the piano hinge trimmed off your model A hood and the flat surface plug welded to the flat strips. Here's a pic of that method. This is from a thread where a guy was using this hinge in addition to lengthening his hood. Here's a link to it: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/custom-hood-for-my-model-a.298817/ I've also included a pic of a genny 32 hood with hinge in place to help visualize.
If you use this hinge in the flat and plug weld your hood flat to it, there won't be any travel left for the hood to actually open. In the article shown, he spot welds an angle piece to the hinge that then creates a flat for him to plug weld the hood top to. The pictures in the article show this if you can zoom in on them. The original 32 hood design is one piece and a whole lot cleaner, but if yours is rusted out, than this would be another option.
After looking at it a little closed...I see that piece he welded to the hinge. But I'm not sure you really need it. Remember, the stainless hing spline is rigidly mounted to the cowl and grill shell and can't move. The hood halves are just hanging on it by the rolled in hook.. It looks to me that it would open just fine. only problem is it might come unhooked. The repo-hinge isn't curled in quite as much as the genny 32. Here's a pic of the hinge mounted in case some have never seen it. It's from a post I made a few years ago on putting a 32 hood on a Model A. G: The pic by flthd31 is how I had to do my hood. The hinge was already cut off mine. Bobper is correct that you won't get total lift or opening (degrees). Are you more confused or do you have it figured out? Tim
The first pic in your last post is the genny '32 hood. The second is the kit that looks like the one Sachse's sells. It's available here: http://sachserodshop.com/newproducts.html (scroll down about half way.) Might want to give them a call.
G; In your 10:45 post the second pic is likely how rootlieb intended the kit to be used. There may be enough of a flange on the gennie hood to weld to, I'm not sure. I did mine similar to the pic above by flthd31 other than to say those look like hood sides or a hood top with some wide louvers. The pic I've included is from the bottom with the hood off the car. Not very clear hope you can make it out. Tim
Thanks a million guys! Tim, it looks to me like your hood lacks the vertical flanges that the Dale's kit (sold by Sachse) has. Yours looks more like the gennie hinge - which is exactly what I want. I'll call Rootlieb tomorrow and order one...
