Folks Of Interest ***DEVASTATION IN HAWAII***

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Bad Bob, Aug 11, 2023.

  1. I'm sure you've seen all the fires in Hawaii. One of our own "TETANUS SHOT" has lost everything!!!! Heard from Chris Casny last night, he's okay, but Eric has lost it all. I believe his Sailboat survived, but that's it. I don't know if he still follows the HAMB, but i'm sure he would appreciate some kind words from us and know we're thinking about him. If I hear anything else, i'll let you guys know....

  2. Yikes. That just plain sucks. I hope he can at least get some help to recover from this. As an aside, I wonder how @Ryan is doing.

He's posted several times today in a discussion about this over on the Garage Journal board. His place is on a different island than where the fires are, so he's okay.

  4. Good to know.

I've spent a bunch of time in Maui and Lahaina especially. Just gutted to see it wiped out. All our best to those who have suffered first hand.

A friend there said it was high winds from an offshore hurricane (Dora) that downed power lines igniting the fires. Regardless, my condolences for the dead and their families.

It was such a sad thing to hear today ..... Family's huddled in a circle as the fire moved in & burnt them to the ground.
I have no idea what the protocol is to rescue people ..... to let them suffer for days without removing them ..... Then let a family huddle around & burn to death together ..... I have nothing else to add.

So sad for all the people affected by the fire there. Know of someone else who lost everything in that mess. Can’t fully comprehend how difficult it must be for everyone and their families.

The almost total devistation is hard to look at and we have some bad wild fires here in the PNW.
Friends of mine just got their home rebuilt in Berry Creek Ca after the wildfire there a few years ago.

The really bad thing for people in Lahaina is that they had no alternative escape route (s) except by boat or air . Most of that area between there and the rest of the island is forest preserve with few or no roads. One road around the coast and that is it. When that road was blocked there was no way out.

I am fine, I don't need any help. Erik "Tetanus Shot" on the other hand, lost indeed everything. He sent me a pic of his burned out roadster, but I don't want to share it, without his permission. It's a lot worse than everybody thinks. The people of Lahaina need help. We have over 1000 people still missing, it's not good.
I don't wanna be the guy begging for donations, but here I am. www.mauifoodbank.org and the Maui humane society has an Amazon wish list (I cant figure out how to paste that link). A lot of pets need help and supplies too. I appreciate all of you. Aloha

Really a bloody shame, very tragic. Condolences to all affected by the natural event. (Up here in BC the province has been on fire for months!). But according to interviews with people who arrived back in Vancouver it seems that the local Gov't was really taken off guard and we all expect immediate action in these times. What I find highly offensive and immoral is that a couple of those who were interviewed went seeking shelter and were directed to boutique hotels charging $1200 and $2000 a freakin night! Some people always put dollars first....

Tragedies like this bring out the very best in some, and the very worst in others. Fires like this are hell on earth.
Thoughts and prayers to all those suffering.

So sorry to hear of Erik's loss! Chris, I'm glad to see you got through this. My condolences and prayers are with the Islanders. We just spent a week and a half in Maui in May. Stayed in Kaanapali but spent the better part of several days in Lahaina. Fell in love with the city, culture and of course the wonderful people of the island. We were shocked to see the footage. Absolutely devastating. There is so much help needed foremost at a human level, then there's the material rebuilding that will take years. Hoping to see some of the deep pocketed airlines, resorts, celebrities step up with some assistance.

  27. I was there in October of 1987. In the middle of Maui, there are large tracts of sugar cane. After the harvest in the fall, they do a controlled burn of the leftovers. This has nothing to do with this horror story.

I did see that the HUGE Banyan tree did survive. This thing sits on a piece of corner property right off the dock area. The strip of shops and restaurants across from it seemed to escape the firs. Lahaina is not a huge town by any means, the shopping district is quite quaint.

As far as the fire response by fire crews etc I think the biggest challenge is the Maui crews are not set up to tackle wildfires like this turned into. Here in BC we have professional wildfire crews that are trained year round along with all of the equipment needed to fight our big forest fires. With some of the vids I saw of the wind prior, it is not surprising at all that this happened. Here's a vid link to the town we lost two years ago in the exact same scenario. 100 plus degree heat and big winds and the fire ripped through and leveled the entire town in the matter of a few hours.
