Any body have an idea on what transmission the Devil Deuce/ Satan Coupe ran in the 50's??? I know it was behind a '51 331 which is what I plan on running so if you know what kind of adapter whether it was Speed Gem, Offy, Craiger etc let me know that too! I am trying to figure out some possibilities for early to mid 50's drag coupe transmissions and I am interested in what was used in that car. I am drawing my inspiration from that car for my '32 later down the road. If you have other 50's drag car examples and their trans setups post them too! Packard LaSalle Ford Buick While I am on the subject, if this is a car I plan on beating a bit should I even screw around with old trans missions like Packards and LaSalle's or should I head straight for M22 Muncie's and forfeit the cool factor of having the correct transmission??? Thanks!!!
That's what my logical side is saying too. M22 would be plenty behind that 331 and would give me the option of finding parts a little easier not to mention the adapters to even mount those older trans missions behind a extended bell housing Hemi. Still wouldn't mind finding out exactly what the Devil Deuce was running though.
J.J , I would go with the more modern trans. It would be neat to be 100% authentic but if you intend to drive the car hard - go with the 4 speed.
Pretty much everything besides the 4speed would be right on point so I guess I know the decision I have to make when it comes time. ****s though because new M22 go for $2000 and Little Wing here on the HAMB is selling a '51 Packard for $125. But I am planning for a pretty hot motor in that coupe so strength is definitely something I need. Any idea on M22 Shifter placement? It's pretty far back isn't it?
Just looked at a couple pics of a Muncie in a Coupe. I am not really sure I like the looks of them from inside the coupe. It's definitely not your cool old top loader look. ****.
That's true F&J!!!! Does anyone know any tech specs especially concerning the Transmission on the Satan Coupe!!!!!
I'd think about the Ford toploader from the mid sixties, their damn near indestructable, and with the Jeep top shifter conversion, puts the shifter further forward, plus you can re-swap the taller shifter handle to look like a swan neck '39.
Thanks! I actually think I am going to go a G Force Mustang T-5 built to handle 500hp. I know it's a modern ****** but I like T5's and with an s-10 tailshaft I can place the shifter where it needs to be. The Mid 60's top loader ford is a great idea though and i'll keep that in the back of my mind. Still wouldn't mind knowing more about the Devil Deuce Mechanics/ ******!!!!!
My guess would be a Ford 39 top loader. The adapter that was made for the 51 extended bell Hemi mounted the ****** in the original position off the K-member and put the shifter in the stock location. I had this set-up mocked up in my 32 Fiver but ran out of green to rebuild the Hemi. Still running the ****** but now hooked to a little 58 283 chevy. I Still Have the Speed Gems adapter for the Hemi somewhere.
This is Correct I think. Just went through the Street Rodder article and they said that in clone coupe they used a Borg Warner three speed instead of the '39 Ford Trans that Fred Allen originally used. So there we have it a closed case!!!! The Truck 3 speed that the clone used is the idea that ALEISTER was talking about I think. They used the truck trans with a jeep top and a '39 lever which gave them the look but still very strong. Another option for us to explore for sure.
Nah, what you want is this: 35-38 Packard Thats the full length of trans you can see. To adapt to a SBC, you need to turn the thrust race down from Ford size to SBC, and make a 3/8" adapter plate like I did - easy peasy
