Went to parts store other day to buy coolant for the new radiator/engine I just put in my 32. Decided to be hip, cool & modern and use Dexcool, like my wifes PU & daughter's throwaway car came with. Parts man told me a GM tech had told him GM having problems with Dexcool eating up aluminum parts on engines now that Dexcool equipped vehicles getting some age on them. Anyone know anything about this? I ended up buying the old green stuff for the 32, works fine but if this is true gonna drain/flush the other vehicles use the old green stuff. Anybody?
I have heard that too. my best advice would be stay with good ole 'greeny'. it dosn't eat up parts, and works great. I'm a wrench, and i have seen more coolant probs with the dex-cool cars than glycol. not totally sure if it's coolant related or design, but i've seen enough not to use it in mine. just my oppinion though. Rat...
Hey I really want to know. I used it in my 32 and I thought I was pretty cool too. Am I doing any good?
All of my friends/family that have repair shops say that ANY time a vehicle comes in for cooling system service with Dex-Cool, it gets flushed and sent out with Hi-C Ecto Cooler (anyone remember that shit??? looked just like antifreeze, but was DEE-licious!). Something about the Dex cool getting sludged up or something, as well as eating parts....
Bad, I work at a machine shop and do cylinder head work, in normally driven car it eats up the gaskets alot, on car that can sit it eats the shit out of aluminum! I wouldnt use it cause the old stuf works. Hope this helps your decision.
I have to agree that it ain't all it's cracked up to be....I have seen a lot of GM engines with heater core, radiator problems,as well as head/intake gaskets eaten up. Stay with the green shit.
But will it hurt anything if you have a dex-cool car, and you flush it and replace it with regular coolant? My Imp has dex-cool from the factory...needs a fluid flush in the spring anyway...I just wonder if certian parts (like the water pump) get accustomed to the stuff, and then fail after replacement with the old skool stuff...like the stories you hear about if you switch from synthetic oil to regular oil??
