Hello All, I am looking for a little help. I am trying to build a library of as many **** Dean articles as I can find. Does anyone know of any old magazines with coverage of **** Dean or **** Dean cars? I would welcome any help.
Also look for back issues of Custom Rodder magazine. They published several articles on Dean's cars and many technical articles on his work.
rtfink... Hi, to another St. Louis H.A.M.B. friend ! You can get some very great first hand info on **** on his Tribute Page on my HALL OF FAME LEGENDS WebSite. Here'e the link that will take you there: http://www.legends.thewwbc.net/gpage49.html This is the Anniversary of his death (He died July 10, 2008) and anyone who checks-out the Tribute Page will learn a bit more of his importance to the R&C Industry, and hear some great comments from George Barris, Darryl Starbird, John D'Agostino, and, myself on what a great guy he was. All the best to you, rtfink...hope to meet up with you one of these days. Jonnie King www.legends.thewwbc.net
Thanks, Jeff. I contacted Keith and hopefully he will be able to help. Thanks Johnnie, I have all of your CD's and you are a great historian.
I think I copied this photo from an ebay auction recently... I did not buy it though, so the scan below is all I have. According to the sign **** Dean did the striping on this car.
There are several How To articles by **** in Tex Smith's How To Chop Tops book... let me know if you have those.. if not I can scan them for you.
The 1933 Sedan, I was told, was built by **** dean and friends Red, and Reds brother. After working in California at known shops **** and Red Drove a Packard back from T.J after upolustry to Indy, and traded for the sedan and finished it...
There were even some stories on **** Dean in some Hot VW's magazines. His son Keith had a cool chopped squareback in the early to mid 80's that recently resurfaced , was restored , and put into a private collection. He will always be an idol of mine, my whole Family is from Wyandotte and my Uncle used to go there and watch him work when he had Southend Kustoms. I have heard a rumor his old shop truck is in a garage somewhere down there, but have yet to confirm that. RIP **** Dean
rtfink... Great ! I'm glad to know that you're one of our "Missouri" friends who got the CD's ! I really appreciate it, and, I'll have a 3rd Anniversary CD ready in the next few months. I've had a number of things that came up that have slowed me down on a few projects. Stay safe ! Jonnie
"Custom Rodder' i think was the name..A TRM publication...almost an article a month for a year...Chop top on a '77 el camino and a chop/section/channel on a duce 4 door for Tom McMullen..complete with lead work...when necessary and filling the roof with a skin from a 60's suburban....that i removed from a really nice donor truck at the ecology center with a leaf spring with a sharpened notch and a 5# sluggo... And yes...i am a new guy...around here anyway....kinda neat to check out what has changed in styles since the last time i did the 'make little ones out of big ones' thing
Anybody remember ****s Dotrod? Little red duece 5 window on a datsun truck ch***is....complete with 1600cc motor? He sold an instruction booklet for years...I remember driving it to LB car show and one of the rear axles came loose...on the 405 fwy...Took a tow truck to make the show..fixed it there and drove it home.
