Did anyone here learn to DRIVE in an old car?

My drivers ed class used a brand new 57 Ford. Does that count as an "old car"?

This is what I was wondering, an old car then or now!

 

When I was 15, my father taught me to drive in a 1966 El Camino, 283 with trips, Muncie 4 speed. He said If I learned to drive that car, that I could drive anything. I thank him all the time for putting me through that.

Mine was in a 49 Chevy Pickup that was used as a daily work truck in 1957.

 

When I was 11(in 1961) my dad taught me to drive in a 1955 Hillman Husky (Minx wagon) . Here in England the age for a licence is 17 , so this was on an off road parking lot near where we lived. When I was 14 I was "borrowing" his 1960 Ford Consul Mk2 of an evening to drive to a friends house 25 miles away. I only got caught when it broke down on the way home and had to phone him to come and tow me home with our next door neighbour's van. My first car was a "sit up and beg" 1959 Ford Anglia ,1072cc (65 cu.in.) sidevalve ( flathead), three speed crash box. I now drive 1946 Ford pickup, 3900cc (239cu.in.) sidevalve (flathead) three speed crash box. Some of us never learn!!!!!!!!!!!.

I learned to drive a combination of vehicles since I grew up on a farm, we had a 41 Ford (tractor) for light work and when I was about 10 I learned on a 49 Chevrolet pickup and that was 1954 or thereabouts, later when I was 15 I rolled the 55 (early version) Chevrolet pickup taking gas to my dad when he was combining oats for the neighbor, if I hadn't been an only child I am sure he would have killed me Dad spilled more patience than I ever had.

 

Drivers Ed didn't get to Calif till 59. first car I drove Solo was a 1941 Chev but had plenty of seat time on cross country trips in my Dad's 48 & 51 Pontiac's before I was 16
in 1959, I got a 1959 Triumph Bonneville (first year for dual carbs) and a 1959 NSU Prinz. the car got better gas miliage bike

 

not HAMB friendly but old to me as a 13 yearold...I wished I had the car now....It would mean a lot....

 

learned to drive in a '56 ford with cruise-o-matic transmission and took my test in it, then soon after learned to drive a stick in a '54 ford ranch wagon with 3 on the tree- it was painted coral red or what ever they called that color but it looked pink- we called it the "pink pig"- that was my car to drive in high school until I saved up enough money to buy my own.

 

I had driven before but I learned to drive a manual transmission car in a, I think, 1954 Ford. I cannot even recall who it was that owned the car, just another guy in the neighbourhood. If he is here, thank you.

 

Dad bought a 1929 Ford in 1952.I was 14.He had Model As as a young man.I think he wanted to share that with me.The highway department was building a new road with a cloverleaf starting on the east side of the city, running northwest,to connect the truck routes.This road was called the US30BY-PASS. It was invented to lighten the traffic flow through the city on JeffersonStreet,which was actually the Lincoln Highway which was the first coast-to-coast road for the automobile to go from Times Square,NYC to Lincoln Park in San Francisco.It did help for a short time but everyone who owned property next to the curb of the by-pass sold and bussiness sprang up overnight. So all the intersections had to have stop lights.The term By-pass changed to Stoplight City. It's real name is Coliseum Boulevard. But after 50 years they built another road on the southside(469)+(69) with no bussiness on the curb. So what we have is a by-pass to by-pass the by-pass. I learned to drive on the origional before it was paved in the 1929 ModelA Ford

I learned to drive in an old car.1955 Ford station wagon. 272/three on the tree.

But like the others have stated, it wasn't all that old at the time.

 

Yeah, a truck. My dad bought me a beast of a '53 F-250. It had seen a hard life two I but I fixed it up pretty good for a kid with limited income. 215/6 with a granny 4 speed. Top speed 50mph.......yippee! Kept me out of trouble though .

 

Learned to drive in a 67 Falcon with a 170 inline six and 3 spd on the floor and took my drivers test in a 64 Falcon 4 dr.

 

I learned how to drive a stick in my friends 30 ford coupe then when i was old enough i took my first car (65 cadillac) to the DMV for my driving test. The lady started laughing at me and thought it was a joke!

 

Depending on how you look at it, this can be a somewhat odd question. Define old.
When I learned to drive it was in a 1964 Ford Galaxie, which was at the time a relatively new car. Of course it is an old car now so I guess you could say I learned to drive in an old car.

I guess it's all a matter of perspective

 

Started out on a Farmall tractor at about 12. Learned to shift and drive in Dad's '48 Ford pickup around a vacant field next to the house. I would occasionally sneak out of the field and around the block when the folks weren't paying attention. My younger brother and I took turns dragging each other around the dirt field in an old truck tire tied to the back of the pickup. Sometimes we would have to stop and just lay on the ground laughing. Took drivers ed in a '56 Chevy sedan. Took the driving test in my first car, a '55 Chevy 2-door wagon. Great times.

 

Learned in 55 Chevy Carryall, 6 stick in '61. Took my test in a 58 Biscayne in 61. 6 Stick also.

 

Learned to drive before age 16 on a 29 Model A bare chassis and one seat in a field. Took my drivers test in a 1951 Plymouth ,non power, stick shift.

When I was around 6 or 7 dad decided to teach me how to drive a stick shift (lived on a farm it was required).
He plopped me behind the steering wheel in our 1950 Chevy 1/2 ton, showed me how to work the floor starter and clutch. I eased out the clutch and headed forward, right towards our big shop.
Dad started yelling and I forgot which pedal did what, plus I could barely reach them and see over the dash at the same time.
I managed to drive inches from the shop, right down the rungs of dads 20' extension ladder. I made it down about 5 rungs before dad reached over and turned the ignition switch off.
Man dad was pissed.
I still have the ladder, but we gave the truck away after dad passed. Wish I would have given away the ladder instead of the truck.

 

An old two lunger John Deere "B", had to pull the fly wheel to start that bad boy, fun in the middle of a WI winter! Then off to the races in a 47 International 1/2 ton. All this started when I was 10, farm boy, product of a 1 room school house with no indoor plumbing, didn't matter, didn't have indoor at the house either. Thought I had died and gone to heaven when I got to high school, indoor toilets and showers....

 

Learned to drive in a 40 Plymouth sedan. Took the test in my mom's 63 Lark 4-dr. And my first actual on the road car, was a 49 Plymouth sedan that i drove for that first summer. This was back in '65, seems like a long time ago.

 

59 lark 4 door, took the test in a 63 nova.

 

My first experience was in '72 with my dad's '65 Valiant 225 leaning tower of power 3 on the tree four door that was all but giving up from rust in Ontario. Drove that beast from age 14 to just before I got asked NOT to return to school in '74 ( home room teacher was very afraid of me) I told him that if he was going to give driving lessons he had best get in, sit down and shut the hell up. I absolutely meant it too! After that I went on to buy a '75 Nova

 

I learned how to drive in an old F-5 farm truck hauling around untied down flats of strawberries. Taught you how to ease the clutch out, read the terrain and slowly apply the brakes.

 

Learnt to drive in my Dad's Taxi,a 59 fc Holden sedan[black]needless to say my first car was a black 59 fc sedan,40yrs later ,i have a sedan and p/van[delivery] both black of coarse!
