When I was about 10 or 11 years old, Dad started me out on a 1948 Allis Chalmers C. Not a car, but old enough. We were pulling fence posts. He'd wrap the chain around the bottom of the post and hook it to the tractor. I'd let out the clutch and bring the front wheels about 3 feet off the ground before the post popped out of the ground. It was a pretty cool way to learn. :D

Geez, DCFS would have a field day with that now.

I learned to drive and took my driving test in my dad's 1965 right hand drive Mini. It was only 12 years old at that time. It's mine now and I still love driving it. Although I found out today that it is much more pleasant if the brake master cylinder doesn't blow out.

  10. When I was 14 or so back in 1957 or 58, drove up and down the alley in a
1947 retired Railway Express truck Dad bought. Later he made it into a "bus"
for a Boy Scout trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in 58. Also practiced on
our 1938 Chevy fishing car. Both had floor shifts.

Took my test in 1959 using the family 57 Plymouth wagon with a V8
and pushbutton shift. Several months later I wrecked it by running
off a curve into a big ditch......insurance company declared it a total.

  11. 1965 Rambler Classic- still have it, my dad wouldn't let me drive the "good" car 76 Olds Cuttlass Supreme. Of course it's a bit "peppier" now.

I know, I know, I'm just a pup that's still wet behind the ears, but I learned on a 79 ford pickup with a standard transmission and worn out synchros. This would have been around 98, making me about 13 years old. So while you old farts might consider it too new to be called old, it certainly seemed like an old truck to me :p

'64 Impala SS, when I was 14. It belonged to my next door neighbor's folks, at the time it was their third car and didn't drive it much anymore. The mother worked third shift and the father was attending bible college to become a pastor. We found the spare key and when his folks weren't home we would take it out, late at night, after his mother went to work, and my parents went to bed. Good times that 'll never forget!

When I got my learners permit my mother drove a '70 pontiac tempest, so I "learned legally" in that car.

This all occured in the late '80s, and I'm still driving old stuff, so not much has changed!

I learned in my brother's 1930 Model A Sport Coupe. We were painting houses in 1956 in a new subdivision. He gave me the key and turned me loose. There were no other cars there so it was the perfect place to learn.

I learned to drive the tractor on the farm. Wide open spaces. Then came the farm truck, so it was a pretty easy transition...

I learned to drive stick in my '53 Ford, this was 1996. The car wouldn't restart if you snubbed it out. It was awful. I wanted to give up so many times, but my Dad wouldn't let me. Glad he made me stick it out, but it would have been nice to learn in a car with a functional generator/battery.

Dad got his car new @ Christmas time, I showed up the following October.

'64 Chevy wagon, 283 3 on the tree. IIRC it has 300,000 miles by the time I learned to drive on it. VERY pissed my cousins bought it from him, and more pissed they now have it sitting in a barn not for sale. "gonna fix it up someday"
