  2. I was 12 years old and the car was my First Car... a 1934 3 Window Chevrolet Coupe. I paid some money down when I was 11 years, took possession when I was 12. Total cost was $50.00. My dad didn't think that I would want to do anything with it other than clean and polish it.........which I did plenty of. He worked shift work, and when he was working, I was learning how to start the car, shift gears without doing the Herky-Jerky constantly, and really feeling good about everything................until he found out from nosy neighbors. He made me trade it off for a Simplex Servicycle, which never ran worth a Damn. It was impossible for me to understand what the problem was, just would not start, and if it did, would not run for long. NEVER FORGAVE HIM for that !
I had three part-time jobs and paid for it myself, and still to this day it is the one I would like to have back.

It was 1992 ? and i was 16. The truck was a 1966 ford 3 on the tree. Drove it for 3 weeks and started to restore it. Took it apart down to the frame and that is how it still sits today.8 trucks later it is still on the list.

This is funny stuff. Learned on a Massey Harris pulling a Feed R Wagon, could pop wheelies when I popped the clutch. Took the test in mom's 76 Caddy De Ville. Parelle parking that monster was a bitch, but going down the freeway was way coooool.....

  9. I learned in two cars that were cool as hell but not that old at the time, (still aren't by hamb standerds, I guess.) A '78 L-82 Vette and a '76 Buick Century with a stout '70 Stage II 455 we had built over that summer, man would that car haul. Took the test in the Vette and the Trooper rolled his eye's when he saw what we were going to take it in, needless to say he failed me. The reason he gave, drum roll please....... I had to try twice to back it back into the parking spot when we got back to the station:rolleyes:, I wish I were making this up. Anyway, maybe not old but some of my favorite memories of my dad, thanks for making me take time to think about it:).

I learned how to drive in a '31 A-RPU, as soon as my little legs could reach the 3 or 4 2x4 blocks held on with plumbers tape that my grandpa' put on the pedals. Had to be 30+ years ago.

That truck is still running, registered, insured, and on the road. Sadly gramps has passed.

A friend of mine taught me how to drive in a '54 Chevy they had set up as a "field car", yeah, just like the one Milner mentioned to Falfa; only this was set up to carry irrigation pipe. It had a rack on it and the pipe was loaded on top. I got into big trouble when I hit the brakes and launched a bunch of pipe, it screwed up a bunch of the ends where his dad had to connect them together. His dad was pissed.

MY daughter is home from Penn State and living with me this summer, we are sharing an 85 Bronco with stick shift. It was an interesting time teaching her to drive it, lots of stalling ,jurking, bucking etc. She has it down pretty good now and can do something most of her friends cannot.

First car I drove was our 39 Pontiac 8 business coupe, in 1948 when I was 10. Mom used to have me drive our 47 Dodge home occasionally, when Dad had a few too many. I was 14. She didnt like to drive in L.A. traffic.

My first car was a '55 Pontiac Chieftain 2 dr ht- bought it with help from my dad when I was 14 and learned to drive in that...well, sort of- I got in a pretty good arguement with my mom when I was either 12 or 13 and sneaked out my bedroom window and drove my dad's '86 F250 a few blocks to get away...mainly because I knew it would freak her out. I fell asleep in the supercab and when my dad got home from work and unlocked the door with his spare key, we both laughed about the situation for a while...I guess you kind of had to be there...doesn't sound that exciting anymore...haha

1963 my older brother hid the keys to his 39 Ford Coupe.

Little brother (me) would find those keys and go for a ride when big brother wasn't around. Dollar gas and you could ride all day.

Still have the car and it is parked in the same garage in the same house.

Guess I was about 13 years old then.

    Those were the days!

Strange thing is the car and the little brother are both still rollin!

I learned how to drive in my first truck.

'65 F100. 3 on the tree, manual steering, manual brakes. I loved that truck more than anything and was so proud of myself for being able to drive it. An old man told me, if I could drive that, I could drive anything. Haha.

I guess he was right because I can also drive a 1909 Studebaker freight wagon pulled by 4 horses. :D

I learned how to drive on the dirt roads of Clear Creek County, Colorado in my father's (at the time) girlfriend's '39 Ford tudor. It was already old and cranky. Since she wasn't a gearhead I don't know why she even had the thing.

  23. My first car, my 56 chevy wagon...I-6, 3 on the tree....

A few years ago I taught a young girl to drive it.

I found this to be quite exciting!!!
How many young people these days will ever get that experience?

  24. Starting in '49, I learned to drive our '37 Ford 2dr, (with help from a stack of feed sacks in the seat) and, then in '50 I started to help with some work on the farm using our 8N Ford tractor, next was the '50 Ford 2dr and then on to the '53 Ford pickup. Took my drivers test in a '56 Chevy 2d hardtop w/ v8 power pack - which was fun during high school. Time does slip by.

I took my drivers test in a '54 Ford 1/2 ton pickup in 1963. Had a flattie in it with three on the tree. Passed the test too. I drove this p/u and dads '55 olds 98 once inna while. My first car was a '53 chevy four door, six cylinder with power glide tranny. Put 3" whitewall portawalls on it, painted the wheels red and filled all the holes with screenwire, newspaper and black magic bondo. I had primer spots all over it but it was mine!!! Used to collect pop bottles in the alleys around my house and wash dishes at the root beer stand for gas money. It wasn't fast but you could cruise all night on a dollars worth of gas....bout three gallons.

The very first car I ever drove was a '53 MG TD. Never got out of 2nd gear in the Acme parking lot, but I thought I was something! What a cool little car. That was in the summer of '65 cause I remember I had just gotten out of school for the summer and would be going to the 6th grade.

Then the following summer my best friend and I pooled our lawn raking money (already had the entrepreneurial spirit) and paid $50 for a '50 Plymouth 4-door. We nearly drove the wheels off that old car in the fields and woods around our house. Man, what fun times!

  28. 1957 Porsche Speedster on Mulholland Drive in the San Fernando Valley. Can it get any better than that? I still remember the thrill of driving that car on a real road, with a real transmission, the sounds, the top down, the wind. It was almost as good as the first time I whacked it.;)
