Did anyone here learn to DRIVE in an old car?

Learned to drive a clutch in my first car,a '38 plymouth coupe.Was 1984,and the car is still in my garage.

49 Ford (now chopped and sectioned) when I was 9 years old on a country road. I knew how to ride dirt bikes so shifting felt natural. I remember my dad sitting next to me with his hand behind my back so I could sit on the front edge of the seat and reach the pedals.

 

55 Jag XK140 was my 1st driver back in 66. Sold it later that year for $350 and thought I was one smart fellow!

 

learned in the tudor in 1985, i was 10. i think it was in a Fedco or Fedmart parking lot in Long Beach. other than trying to steer real sharp turns it was pretty easy car to drive.. it was all down hill after that

 

Learned to drive in '61 in a '55 F100, which great granny bought new, sorta. I was 6 years old. Still have it, complete with the dented fenders. Did I mention the family owned/owns orchards? Ouch!

 

Yep..I was 8 years old (in '68) and learned in a '59 Chevy Apache with a three-on-the-tree and the starter pedal on the floor....lol. Good times..

 

Oh yeah...my sister still has that truck..she got it from my grandpa around '76 or so..

59 chev stationwagon/cutdown..had a hay bailer on the back of it..in 1960., I was in high cotton, and wiping my ass with bottom leaves...

In '69 the lady across the street would let me drive her 36 Ford. I was 14.

 

Does a 1947 Massey Ferguson tractor count? It was a royal crown b*tch - the shifter stuck up between your legs and at just the right height, and there was no back on the seat. If you stomped the brakes, you'd crush your 'nads on the gear knob, and if you set the hand throttle too high and popped the clutch, you'd flip off the back and wind up flat on your ass, with the tractor lurching across the field unguided. Fortunately, I only fell off once, and the bush hog wasn't hitched up. After that, learning to drive a 3 on the tree in an old Ford F100 p'up was a cinch!

 

I learned to work a cluctch and drive a stick in a 56 MGA the trans was complete crap so once you figured it out on that you could handle anything else lol

 

I learned to drive in my 1971 Dodge Demon. I even 2 months ago went for the driving test in the car and the mass dmv allowed me to use it despite not having an accessible e-brake [thank god the dmv cop was a hot rodder, he himself has a 33 ford roadster] plus I passed the test.

 

It wasn't old then, but it is now, a 1977 Vauxhall Viva with a 4 speed in England. Over there you had to pass your test in a stick shift, if you did in an automatic then that's all you were allowed to drive.

 

Oh ya and I learned to drive the 56 in like 2002 hahahah

14 years old , out rabbit hunting with my dad and a friend of his, we lost all our hunting dogs in the deep snow. I had to drive a Willy's jeepster for an entire day in a blizzard out on back country roads up north michigan, searching for the 5 dogs we never found

what a way to get some hours behind the wheel...got real good at keeping it on the top of a crowned icy dirt road packed with feet thick ice..only slipped off a few times..what a bitch it was to get back going again

they first thing i ever drove was my moms 48 chevy truck, but really got the hang of it on a old 9n ford tractor...... good times

 

this 12 year learned how to drive this car

 

Grandma took me out for two or three saturdays in her 63 plymouth and learned me the clutch and 3 speed. then she gave me the car. Dad took it away because i was 14. he beat the piss out of it till it got crushed.

 

I learned to drive in a 1972 Coupe De Vile. In 1988, Had to drive it to high school. got 8 mpg, idling, 135 mph, or off a cliff with a tailwind. couldn't get a girl near the back seatthe whole two years I owned it. sold it for $100, kept the tires, got a 64 chevy pu for $400, got laid two days later.

 

I started learning to drive at about age 11 or so in a 60 Olds 4 door hardtop. Later Daddy traded her in on a 65 Delta 88 4 door hardtop with a 425 4 bbl. What a tire smoker!!!!!!!!!

 

Learned to drive in a 29 Ford model A I bought when I was 13. Took my drivers license in my folks 41 Plymouth sedan at 14 in 1950. Had a Whizzer and a Cushman both when I was 12, rode them everywhere in the Texas hill country around Kerrville in 1948-49, then bought the model A to learn how to drive a car. In the late 40's and early 50's the police never bothered with us kids and we rode and drove with out a license.

 

I learned on a tractor at somewhere around 11 or 12 years old. I got the bug for a 3 pedal ride at an early age. Granted it wasn't as hard since the throttle was a lever, but even then I was determined to "master" the art of working that clutch pedal!!

 

I learned to drive my Dad's truck when I was 15. It was a '49 Chevy 3100 in '66.

 

It's old now, but it wasn't when I learned to drive.
