Did anyone here learn to DRIVE in an old car?

I learned to drive in my moms 1962 impala ss, What engine would this possibly be? white with a red stripe and red and white interior this was in 1970, I was 6, this was my car, i cleaned this car every day after school for 2 years from 1970 till 1972, My heart was broken when my uncle bought this car from my dad for 600 bucks, the son of a bitch, he had it for about two weeks and then he put the thing into a tree, drunken son of a bitch. My dad had a 66 poncho catalina big engine I was 6 had a 4 speed gold, the genius traded it for a 70 catalina, I was so pissed off that I told him right there in the stealer ship that I wanted my f 'ing car back and I would not leave I was 6, I got my ass blistered, 2 weeks later the tranny took a crap on the 70, a matic whoopty doo, we went back to the stealer ship and I told the old man and the guy at the place to give me back the good car and that they should have f 'ing listened to me.. I was 6.. strangely I didn't get my ass blistered... but I think the dealer did. Oh a you may ask.. Francisco what kind of car did your momma get after the Impala she must have traded up right...well heres a spot of genius as well.. some sort of a Studebaker wagon with a hole in the floor from about 60... I think this gem was 50 bucks..Trauma..

 

Drove my grandfather's '48 Chevy 3/4 ton truck in circles when I was 10, and then snuck it down the alley behind his horse barn. It was a four speed, so I screwed a Hurst T handle covered with gold fur on the stick for higher top end and lower e.t.s.

 

Started out on a ford tractor in the late 40s when I was about 8 or 9 years old. I had to stand up and throw all my weight, which wasn't much,on my left leg to get the clutch to go down. Later in the early 50s it was a 46 chevy pickup we had on the farm. Lots of room on a farm to learn before you hit the county roads. I wish I had that old 46 now.

i am 16 and i work for a guy that has a lot of beautifully restored/custom fords and murcurys. ive been working there since i was ten. when i was 12 i learned how to drive his 1953 f100, flathead w/ 3speed column shift. when i was 14 i learned how to drive his 1950 f2,learning to double clutch.

 

I guess I qualify. I learned how to drive a large truck using a 1958 G M C also known as a "Crackerbox cab". That was in 1970. scrubba

 

I learned how to drive stick in a 55 Chevy dumptruck, nothing like figuring out the two speed rear axle and goofy clutch in a truck hauling 10 tons!

 

Learned to drive while working on my uncle's farm in the summers. He had an old 8N tractor, and a '47 International panel. I drove the tractor first, but later bought the International with the money I earned from him.
Since I was 13 yrs. old I couldn't take it home. Aftr getting it running and fixed up I drove it all over the farm whenever the work was done. Also drove it weekends when we'd come out to visit.
The day I got my license I had my brother take me straight to my uncle's to pick up my old panel!

well, technically a 78 cutlass cruiser wagon - but the falcon was my first car and first standard shift...

 

1963.... '49 Olds coupe and a '29 RPU with an 303 Olds and a '39 trans.

 

Learned how to drive, if you want to call it that, on a John Deere Model 40. Plowing fields and bush hogging at my grandfather's place.

After a couple summers of that I got promoted to a 1-ton Dodge pickup. Dad figured I wouldn't be able to tear it up, and if I could learn to drive that I could drive anything.

Yeah, I learned to drive in an old car.......but the damn thing was almost brand new at the time

 

Ya notice how many guys learned to drive on the family farm? We were city slickers but many of my friends also started on a small tractor or a grain truck. Sadly kids today rarely get that chance. Or have a chance to pedal newspapers, pump gas, carry out groceries. Life today must be crappy.
I learned to drive grand dad's nearly new 1954 Chevy, the school's 1955 Chevy driver training cars, and my uncle's 1956 Ford . The Ford was the only automatic. I've still never driven a farm tractor!
Drove D-9's, motorgraders, bucket loaders, and other yeller equipment.
The most unusual thing ever was my 1926 Model T.

I am 65. I would take this 49 Plymouth around the block when my parents went out in the new 60 chevy. Had my own key made. I was 13

 

"Officially" with my dad in a 1959 Ford 292 and 3 on the tree. Wasn't old as this was in about 1960. The poppin johnnies and 9N tractors were just kinda natural on Grandma's farm so didn't even know when that started. Also used to drive the back lot in a 53 Crosley PU.

Just look to the left and you will see a 1948 Packard that my Dad purchased new and now it's mine. That's the car I learned to drive on in 1965 and I still have the car it has NEVER left the family !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 

I was riding motorcycles before I drove a car. My first car was a 1961 A-H 3000. Drove it until 1- 1/2 years later, someone T-boned it at an intersection. Bent the frame and destroyed the car. There fault.

 

I learned to drive on a 1966 Buick Special that I bought when I was 15 (1989). While OT, it was still eight years older than I was at the time, me having been born in '74. That was my first full-on frame-off resto.

 

Learned to drive skytracks backhoes ford duallys and dumptrucks from 12 to 16 working the yard at a construction company. First car was a 69 camaro so it was old in the 90's.
