Where did my thread go on Rebuilding vs. Crate motors? I'm already back on page 10 and can't find it. It came out of the gate pretty hard but I was afraid it would get deleted for politics.

  2. Uh did you mention illegal aliens or the race for the whitehouse?

    Did you try a search?

You never can out guess a moderator here...There's a thread on bagging a 55 Ford already been on the site for several days..which in my opinion is way off topic more than yours

    Nope, that's not it.

How is my thread off topic? It's about crate engines, lots of guys use 'em.

  7. Could make for a decent discussion, maybe your delivery was poor. Could be you could try a different tack and mention to leave the name callin at the door and it could make for a real decent discussion, or not. :D

I suppose that there are a lot of reasons for either, some of them valid. :D :D

Sorry my fault. I posted about wanting a 325 Dodge crate engine and we know that isn't politically correct. Yep when you see what lives and dies here it can make you wonder....

  10. He was talking about the bagging a Ford being off topic of course lots of guys do that too.

@Speed Gems I am going to guess that it was your tone. Of course I have been known to be a little less than tactful myself so who knows. :D

Let's try this I am officially declaring this a no whining, drama free zone. So now my friend Speed Gems state your purpose and lets have a discussion. ;)

My purpose was too have a discussion on Rebuilding an engine vs. buying a crate motor. and maybe my tone was a bit off.

  12. Looks like it did. I don't see a thread topic on rebuilding vs. crate on your list of created threads...

325 Dodge? That is a poly head, isn't it?

  15. Well I suppose that there can be a lot said about either.

We should probably recognize that not everyone on the board for example is a mechanic much less an engine builder. Given the price of a good builder these days perhaps a crate motor is a viable option.

That said short of what most of us consider to be modern motors crate motors are not often an option at all. Now I have seen old motors with a wards rebuilder tag on them as well as other rebuilder tags. perhaps that was the traditional version of the modern crate engine. So there is a couple for the crate category I guess.

Nope, this one has two rocker shafts per head and the block is stamped KD500.

I have been ***embling engines for 50 years , my own as well as friends , I have a good friend who does great machine work [& now his son]. I still measure everything & am as careful as can be. There's something about using something you put together , that runs flawlessly & lives a long time , that makes me feel good . That's probably why I doubt I'll ever buy a crate engine.

  18. I actually bought a crate motor when I first joined the HAMB. I friend shelled his motor on the way home from work on a Friday, there was no way I was going to get a motor built and have him back on the road by Monday. I called the local GM dealer and they said, "yep got a motor in stock come get it." I drove down and picked up the motor, had him on the road by Sunday without ever breaking a sweat.

I build one off motors for myself, have been known to build one for select few. I used to build more then now. One of the reasons that the belly ****on remark bothers me so much is the fact that none of the motors that I build are. Even if I build two the same they are not, I am good but not that good.:D

Tongue-in-cheek remark I made, Dave. Just tryin' to contrast the old traditional mind set with the new traditional mind set.

Yes the polyspherical Mopar it tradition Nuevo. I come a long way myself. At one point I thought the 4.6L Ford would be a great engine to stuff in an old car. But you live, grow and come to a better understanding. I once came across a 327 still in its GM shipping crate at a swap meet, so I guess they can be traditional.

  26. That's been gone over quite a few times.
Basically you get a deluge of guys who've not been inside an engine and they can't say enough good. You get a second wave of guys who've been bit hard by a rebuild and they can't say enough good about their conversion, like they just found religion. You'll get a few responses from guys who really know their **** but get covered by the deluge.

If I wanted to make money, I'd market and sell crate engines to the m***es. If you tried you could probably move 100 of them a month, profit off of every one and never set hands on it.
If I wanted the best for myself, I'd rebuild it with purpose chosen parts.
