Did they ever really make this intake?

Or is it really a one off deal? It's a BBC cross ram 8x2. Curious to know. I'd never seen one and the guy thought it was modified from a 6x2 but that is tough to do if you've ever seen one. This looks right from what I can tell...

You sure that’s not a 348 or 409 intake? I wouldn’t think there would be any 3 bolt carb stuff ever made for the 65 and newer motor
    That is very cool

No, I'm not sure. Just goin by his words. I'd actually rather have it be for a 348 but I'll tell you for sure in a couple days. It was worth the effort. It hasn't been run since the 60;s and still has all the linkage and fuel logs plus all 97's. Can't wait to see it. Just dyin to know if there was ever one factory made...

    why would anyone produce one?

the first production BBCs were in '65,
the old three bolt carbs would have been a serious step backward..
    and eight of them?

    do you have better pictures?
is it a 2x4 cross ram with the tops altered?
check the port layout.. is it really a big block Chev?

I have heard of the 348/409 being called big blocks.. before there was a "big block"

I've got an unmodified Edelbrock 6X2 cross ram for a big port BBC that is drilled for both the 3-bolt and 4-bolt 2-barrel carbs. It looks as though you could squeeze a couple more small carbs on there if you did a little shuffling but it would be a very tight fit.

No better pictures yet. The whole thing is strange and I really bought it for the carbs, linkage, and fuel logs but if it's really really cool and I verify what it is, I might not have the heart to split it up after 40 years. I think I can tell by the cross ram pattern that it was never a dual quad but it sure looks like the 6x2 cross ram but I can't imagine how you could modify it with the cross ram ports. Hopin it's a real factory piece for a 348 as I have a buddy who would really need that.

Can you post a picture of your manifold. I was thinking those had dedicated runners and weren't really a lot style intake to be adding extra carbs like a U-Fab?

Looks like a Big Block Chevrolet Edelbrock 6x2 (pretty rare) with plates added on top to mount the 8 carbs....or on second glance it does look like the top part of the intake has a little more length than the 6x2. The extra length could have been welded on....hard to say.

looking at the picture of the top I see the plenums apear too narrow to ever have been for four barrel carbs

in the side picture you can see a line at the top of the plenum,
the near side is blocked by the fuel log,
it could be the tops were milled off a 2x6 setup
and new tops were used to accept the 8 carbs...

I would lean more towards it being a 409 manifold....it is hard to tell from those pictures though.

one of the major intake companies (forget who) did in fact make 8 pack setups for the "later" poncho motors, which i beleive would be 1964+ .....

the poncho 8 pack i saw also used the 3 bolt carbs, and i know this for a fact because at the time i was searching ebay for as many usable carbs as possible, and could only find 5 ... ugh, so wish i had bought that mani

although the 3 bolt carbs WOULD be a big step back in tech, so is putting ANY type of carb on anything being built today ... considering fuel injection is 25 years old at this point :)

the truth is that cheap parts = perfect hot rod parts, and it would have been soooo easy to come up with 8 carbs to fit that manifold back in the day, where as anything "new" at the point would have ben much more money, and it would have had to have been bought EIGHT TIMES OVER

edit, now that i look at the pics closer, the intake i saw also had the same design, where the plenums fed the OPPOSITE bank of cylinders, instead of how the setups for webers feed the cylinders directly below them

If you compare it to B***'s picture, it really looks like it was a 6x2 that has been added onto...the ends look fabricated.

I hope it is for a 409....No matter what, this needs to go on an open hooded car.

If it get new pictures, I'll post them up..otherwise I'll let ya'll know in a few days....

Did the 348/409 have siamesed ports? Side view sure looks like siamesed ports, possibly rectangular.

never worked on one myself so I'm just taking a guess:rolleyes:

I just talked to the guy again and it was on his rectangular port 454 so it definitely won't work on a 348.

looks to me that the second carb on the first row, and the third carb on the second row were added . The carbs originally were in a triangular footprint front and back... I've never seen such a thing either so I'm prolly just full of ****.

I hope so. I wanted it to be for a 348-409 so we could actually use it. I don't see a whole lot of 454 powered hot rods. They seem to be more in the street rods (502's) that wouldn't be into vintage induction. I know there are exceptions though. I'd swap my small block for a 454 just to use it but it would be a wasted beauty under the hood.

By "wasteful", I mean I'd gladly do it. It would just be a shame to hide it. Anyone close wanna trade a good 454 for a fresh 358 small block or a 6 duece 331 hemi that needs rebuilt? Or maybe a hot MEL Lincoln 462?

You could just give me the 8 carb intake setup, I'll put it on the 427 I'm building for my 61 belair bubbletop....

There are a few of us out there with a 454. One of these days, i will get it together and running. Here is a pic of my intake. An old moon manifold with a few webers :D

hey... ill be putting one in my model A drag coupe :p

does that make me a street rodder?

what would something like this go for?

running one of these wont be competative but it would look cool and still run hard.
