One morning my dad comes in my room to wake me up. "What's all the grass and clods of mud under the bumper?" Um. "That must have been Chad" I replied, incriminating my older brother. More like throwing him under the bus. I couldn't believe he forgot to clean that up after the donuts in the front yard of the high school. I went outside and saw it myself. Looked horrible in the sunlight, no question we'd been "off road" in the old mans vehicle. '78 Buick Park Ave w/ 350 Olds had plenty of power for tearin' up wet grass. Spun out one night giving it hell around a corner. Did a full 360 + degree rotation before stopping inches away from a mailbox. A brick mailbox. I was happy to not be put in the position of explaining why the car needed body work, close call for sure.

  2. yup.... i did, i learned to drive in my mother's 77 buick hearse (yes, a hearse.. it was her baby) with a 403 olds wide block, that sucker would burn em a 50mph , never
neded to do that pussy power brake stuf with mom's meat wagon... hell i used it
to street race the rich kids with vets, beat em to... now my mother uses it to
eat rice burners , she hates those little cars, says "they sound like bumble bees on roids" , that old beast is still one the road, it's had 4 trannys replaced,(2 my fault 1 my father's fault and one my mother's) and the 403 has been rebuilt and the heads
    ported and polished.

My Dad had a 94 Buick Roadmaster with the LT1 I used to scare my friends pulling up they'd think it was the cops. I never wrecked it but driving with the old man one day he casualy wondered aloud what the car was governed at and without thinking I said about 110 woops.

My dad thought the sun rose and set on Nash automobiles. I refused to be even SEEN in them, much less drive or abuse them. I must thank him, it's about half the reason I bought my first car at 14 yrs old. I needed a V8 and I needed some duals.

He did finally buy some decent BIG 3 stuff, but by that time I had already owned a dozen cars, and wasn't looking back. I did drive a Cadillac he had - he sold it to a guy in Oregon and I took it down there for him. That's about it.

Well, unfortunately I have an older brother that messed all that up for me. I was never allowed to drive my folks cars due to my brother crashing, dogging, racing, etc. I had to buy my own car/insurance/plates/tags on my own. My first vehicle was a 1977 chevy scottsdale stepside with a 350 4 bolt main that I paid $600 for. It took me longer to save the $$ working at burger king than it did to totally destroy the truck. I will say that racing and jumping the truck on sidestreet intersections at 50 was pretty fun.....til your rear end starts clicking and popping every time you turn a corner. Good times-cool thread!

  9. I learned to drive in a 62 Chevy wagon with 6 cylinder and 3 on the tree
Did you know that if you're on a hill, you could actually do a burn out?
But, before I learned to "drive," dad had a 50 Chevy pickup with a granny 4 speed. Did you know that if you wind it out in granny low and slam second, that you can actually leave about 6" of rubber in the driveway?

I used to beat the hell out of both my parents cars, being in auto shop I was the one fixing them anyway. Hindsight being 20-20 though it will be a very cold day when my kids get to drive my toys.

In Downey, Ca. back in the early 60's my friend's Mom had a '56 Studebaker sedan with a 289 V8 and automatic tranny. We would drive out to this old field near his house and take it off roading. This area was used for dumping trash, old furniture, appliances and kids with dirt bikes and Jeeps would go crazy out there.
We would take turns running this little course that was laid out and see who could run it fastest, great fun and that old Study never gave out!

  14. Dad had a cool old '54 Willys CJ-3B 4x4 that he would let me drive when I was between cars, primarily because it would only do just under 55 floored, and it was nearly impossible to get in trouble in it!

Since I felt the need to squeeze every bit of speed that 60 mph speedo indicated nearly every time I was in it, I managed to burn the valves up in that little OHV 4-cylinder! Dad wasn't real happy about that, but after the head work on the Willys, it ran like a friggin' top! Then, he decided to sell the damn thing! I missed that thing!

Dad also had a beautiful '63 T-Bird that I loved to take out on the highway and just cruise as fast as I dared without risking a ticket! That was the first car I ever drove over 100 mph!

In 1975 my father bought a brand new Cadillac Coupe Deville. Most nights he was asleep by 9pm and me and the boys would take her out. This went on for a couple of years and we never got caught.

Nope. Dad killed WWII. Mother never had a licence or car. She did drive jeeps at a Army ammo plant. Pulled carts around loaded with bombs with the jeep. i guess thats where several girls learned to drive.

  17. No but, there's a farmer somewhere in northern KY who still wonders how I got that big old Caddy through that creek bed.

  18. I look back and regret all the worry I put my parents through. Maybe my parents (both deceased) forgave me.

My dad bought the first 66 Olds Toronado in my home town. Was a dull beige color but a real runner, I remember my dad telling admirers that "this car was designed around a 500 horsepower engine". I don't know WTF that meant but sure sounded good. I still remember the wide accelerator pedal that absolutely begged to be "matted". I remember the barrell type speedometer that my mom pegged 130mph on I-65. GO MOM!!

Anyway, I was 12-13 and could drive. Most farm kids could drive at 8 or 9 and I was no exception. Every chance I got I hit the road in that Olds. That car was a tire burner.

The carburetor never was right. I'm sure it was a minor problem (what all could be wrong with an early quadrajet?) Never would stay in adjustment. All the techs at the Olds dealership worked on the carb but no luck. Mom dropped it off at the Buick dealership here in town to see if they could fix it. Service manager told her "pick something off the lot to drive home".
On the used car lot was the usual Buicks, Pontiacs, Olds but there was a red 69 Corvette big block. GET THE VETTE!! And she did.
Drove it home, I gave her a couple of hours and asked "can I see the keys for that Vette? I wanna listen to the radio". VROOM! I was gone!

What an ass I was. Not only did I abuse my Mom's luxobarge but now I was hammering on a car that belonged to someone else.
I remember flooring the gas and watching the tach bobble when the trans shifted... Before it even moved!
Mom returned the Vette to the dealer with chunks of tire stuck to the quarter panels never knowing what happened... Or maybe she did??

I truly regret all the things I put my parents through during my early years of hot rodding.

  23. Let's see, going around the corner of Beach Blvd and Pacific Coast Highway in a 72' GMC pick-up with a 4 star camper attached, on the front drivers wheel only, then lighting them up after all four came to the ground, just so we could get to the waves quicker? Na, just normal socal kid driving.

Dad had a Brand new 2000 chevy 3/4 ton that was loaded with hay and mom wanted it out of there. She told me to dispose of it. I asked how. She replied 'i dont care' lol, okay anything for my mother right? We took some hairpin curves at 60ish drifting those with hay flying everywhere, proceded to jump every hill at 80plus on gravel we could find. But there was just that bit that didnt want to come out, we knew just wehre to go. There was a dirt road that intersected a gravel one that had about a 5 foot 45 degree 'ramp'' where it intersected. Needless to say, 85-90 mph later with a 1/2 mile start, we hit it, no idea how far i got up in the air but im sure it was amazing, we cleared about 50 foot worth of road. When we were done the tops of the tires were in a good bit more than the bottom, the fenders didnt really line up, the lower valance was missing, bed gap to cab was a lil off and had some dents in the back of the cab where it hit the box, and snapped the tailgate handle off. I was for sure we were gona trade front end for ass end. Came home, told mom the hay was all gone. Nothing was mentioned about the fucked truck as it quickly got traded off...im sure she thinks answers through a little better now. And my cousins grand am also lost about 3 qts worth of storage in her oil pan on that intersection.

Always had my own cars, but a buddy of mine would drive?????? his dads nova, before he got his own, Tommy would unhook the speedometer on it after we put about 15-25 miles on it, his dad would eat him out for putting that many miles on it, hell every nite we drove all over the state 100-300 miles every nite, his dad rest in peace went to his grave thinking Goodyear tires were the worst tires ever made, that poor Nova was abused to the max. :D

I never did any major damage to my parents vehicle but a good friend sure did. It was about 9am during high school when my buddy comes dragging in with bandages and one of those funky neck braces. I asked him what the hell happened and he said I just rolled dads new truck. It had snowed the night before and he was out jacking around and rolled it into the ditch on the way to school. The thing had under 4000 miles and the body shop replaced every panel but the tail gate. His parents werent too concerned. I still wonder to this day, 20yrs later how my Dad would have reacted to me pulling a stunt like this. He would have not been amused!!!

  30. I wasn't allowed behind the wheel of my Dad's car until I was 26! My buddy took me for my driver's test.
