Hot Rods Did you use your car's original frame or use a reproduction of the original one?

  1. I know it is implicit that this thread is about Phords but I'll comment about my '36 Willys Coupe. Used the stock frame. Cut out the X-member and used it to weld into the outer rails as boxing. Added a rear X-member from a '56 Oldsmobile and a 2" square tubbing X-member as a rear tranny mount for my Hydro. Has worked fine for 50 years.

  2. My old survivor 32 still has the original frame with a 34 x-member and 34 rear crossmember, which lowered the rear.

I built mine from 2x4 3/16 box. I used an aftermarket 32 front cross member and a stock A rear cross member. I also built the bolt in cross member to support the T-5.

I either build my own or use Henry’s.

I like using original Henry frames but here is one I am putting together that uses repro rails with stock x member and crossmembers. The original rails needed too much work to save, but for some reason the rest of the frame survived without any problems. IMG_0692 copy.jpg

I used original cross members and Just a Hobby deuce rails. The rails that came with my car were too pitted and rusted. Since I had to get a bonded state title. The rivets on a stock deuce frame would seem to result in rust and stress cracks.
Some of the requirements in Canada make it difficult to use modified frames because of safety certification requirements.

I built all of my cars with original Ford frames with various levels of modification except my ‘31 2 dr sedan. I was swamped at my shop just after I started to build it so I had SAC in Orange County build me a roller using my front end. It was six months late and about 30% over the quote but it was all TIG welded and very nice. They wanted to see the original frame then they transferred the numbers onto the new frame. I still have the original frame.
The Model A coupe I just bought has a nicely done stock frame with all P&J add-ons, again all TIG welded. That was a big factor in my decision to buy it.
