Technical Dielectric grease usage?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by lothiandon1940, May 28, 2015.

  1. Lots of great info within.....and a few good laughs as well.

  2. I've been wiring my '29 Model A truck and taking extra care to make good connections between the headlights, taillights and other switches and the body and frame grounds. I wire-brushed the heck out of the fender braces, headlight bar cups and the headlight housing, then bulb-greased the snot out of those connections. Same with anywhere I need a good ground. Thick ground strap connecting the block and frame, another couple of woven ground straps between the battery negative and the frame and the body and frame, plus dielectric grease and star washers anywhere the straps attach. If it looks like there may be paint between areas that need a good ground, out comes the wire brush and coarse sandpaper, followed by the dielectric grease.
I've found over the years that bad grounds are 90 percent of automotive electrical problems. Preventing them in the first place saves a lot of aggravation.

From everything I've read, dielectric grease is non-conductive and was designed to prevent electrical conductivity between connections, protecting them from moisture.

Maybe I misunderstood some of the posts, but I would only use it AFTER connections are made, but not bathing connections in the stuff and then mounting them together.

  4. ....That's exactly why I started this thread back when I did, to try and clear up some of the different advice for using the stuff. Thanks for the post.

Iam thinking the reason bulb bases break off in the sockets. They used to be made of brass and never seized in the sockets. They are now made of what looks like aluminum

Gonna get me some of that. I've always been real sparing with that dialectic stuff. Could never get myself to smear it all over some little bitty connection that was important.

Just realized Seb said that 10 years ago!!

Goddam! I need to find about a ONE ounce size of that kopr-shield!
