What are the differences between 1932 fenders (front and rear) and running boards on light trucks vs p***enger cars? I'll be using a p***enger car ch***is (I currently have ASC rails) but building a 1/2t pickup. I was going to run fenderless, but would like to build for the option of fenders. Just want to know what I'm looking at before I search (particularly for rear fenders or running boards). Thank you.
Hey Don. Front fenders and running boards are basically the same for p***. or pickup...original rear fenders are rare as hens teeth and will cost you dearly...most guys go gl*** rears. There actually is a slight difference in front fenders for p***. and pickup...it's a slight bump at the front cross members for pickups, but since you're using non original frame rails, it don't matter.
The rear fenders on p***enger cars have longer tails at the back end, right? I ***ume the other dimensions are close, and maybe the mounting holes are different? I do know truck fenders are rare, so I figured I'd consider car fenders. Thanks for good info so far.
I see now that the truck fenders have a small kick at the front to fill the space between the bed and frame. Hmmm.
I've seen adds recently for new pick up rear fenders. I think they are made by United Pacific. Spendy
Larry, The front fenders are the same for p***enger car and pick up in 1932. The slight hump is on the 1933-34 pickup front fenders to clear rivet heads on the frame. There are also other small differences so you can't just hammer out the hump and expect to use a '33-'34 truck front fender on a '32. Charlie Stephens
UPI rear truck fenders are about $900 each per their rep at the GNRS this year. We have to pay about a $1000 each for a nice fender on the West Coast when you can locate them.
Howells currently has a set of Pu rear fenders on E-Bay, I ***ume their UP. A truck rear fender is approximately 10 inches wide and a coupe/roadster 11 inches. A sedan fender is a trimmed version of the coupe fender. Fronts and boards are the same. Also stock trucks don't run frame horn covers.
I was just reading a new catalog from Mac's last night (yeah, I know...) and noticed that they are selling a steel reproduction '32 fender for pickups/trucks. They say it is wider at the running board, and will require the buyer to remove the small hump at the front crossmember from their original fenders and weld it into these new repros. I think it's a huge disservice to the old car community that a company can spout misinformation like this, and probably sell some unsuspecting dupe a set of fenders that won't fit. They are selling '33-34 parts as '32. And they won't fit. As said above: a '32 front fender is the same, car or pickup. The only difference you may find is for a tonner truck, which has a wider spare tire well. Still bolts up the same.
Thanks for all of the info. I now know the difference. Seems like repop is an option if I eventually want to spend the money. The Howell's/UP fenders are $600/ea, so while still expensive, at least they are available. I have two sets of front fenders in my parts stash, so I'm good on those. Thanks again. You guys are the best.
