Striking out in my search for a diff cover gasket. 1939 Pontiac Series 25. Little help?

  2. I've learned that really old parts that use paper style gaskets and no longer on the shelf is why they make sheet gasket material. I can make one faster than find and retrieve it, not to mention today's cost for shipping and handling.

  3. I use silicone.

X2 on just use silicone or similar sealer. Or be traditional and cut it out of the side of a 12-pack container (joking, sorta).

Once you open that stuff, can you still use some later?

    Yes, just install cap.

It comes in a tube like toothpaste or you can get it in a can like cheese whizz. The cheese Wizz cans are more expensive but they work wonderfully. You press the nozzle side ways and it feeds a real nice bead to lay down...

Only thing I found with the right stuff is if you need to take a part it can be a real chore.

We used to make a gasket out of newspaper and a thin coat of non-hardening Permatex. No, wait, that was a third member gasket. I would do the same thing using a roll of gasket paper from the auto parts store in your case.

I use an Exacto knife and cut mine out of gasket material.

An easy way to quickly punch out holes in a paper gasket is to cut a short piece of tubing and sharpen the edges on one end with a file or sandpaper. Using this, a hammer and a block of wood, you can easily make all of the holes you need. A small screwdriver or nail is handy to clear the tube as needed.

I used this idea to make 2mm thick Viton flat O rings for a carburetor; a 3/8" tube to punch out a Viton 'dot' and a 3/16" tube to punch out the center of the 'dot' to make the flat O ring.
