To me, it looks dirt-caked, not rusty. Hmmm....

I just went back and looked at the photos again, and I still think it's cool. Archeaology is a big interest of mine, right after cars, so this is a rare treat for me; both at once!

I think a lot of y'all are missing the point of this. You act like someone promised you something and then took it away. This is a time capsule, not a car museum. The point was not to preserve a car in pristine condition for 50 years. It was just to bury some stuff, and see what it looks like in 50 years.

I think it is very cool that someone would actually bury a brand new car and dig it up 50 years later. I douby anyone would have the will to do it again today. Volunteers?

As someone said, at least it's low mileage.

Yeah actually I think what intrigued the people back in '57 so much was the idea of the thing being buried, underground, then dug back up. A little different than just simply storing the thing someplace, because the condition it would be recovered in would've been just the same, only with a little dust. In this case, they were running the risk of digging up a pile of rust, an intact car, who knows what.

Either it was that or the publicity.

I'm suprised they didn't bury the contestants with the car.

    Tulsa seems sharp like that.

I think this is still pretty cool no matter the condition. I'm betting the condition is better than 90% of the cars on the for sale section.

And a special thanks to Crab for the pics. Nice.

  14. Lusk, I think that is just an urban legend. If I have heard of it previously it can't be real.

So, did they lift it on the original beams, or did they put new ones under there?

Just rip the fucking bag off already! I wanna see what this thing looks like. I agree that even if it's unrestorable it's still a piece of history that should be saved. At least it's all in one piece.

I am not sure about the beams.
We heard from a county guy at the scene that that the floor pan and trunk floor appeared to be rusted through. They said it broke loose and a bunch of water drained out of the holes!

They are going to "Unveil" the car Friday night in the Convention Center. The tickets have been sold out for weeks. I'll bet there may be some available now......

They ought to just wail into the convention center rope towing that thing behind a new hemi truck and make a couple of wide open figure 8's. Think the steering at least works???

  22. Any word yet as to the condition of the time capsule woman and her daughter? :D

According to the old guy in the video..."Whoever ends up with this car will have a prestine vehicle, every precaution was taken to preserve the car."

Uh...except the water filling the time capsule for 50 years precaution.:D

It does suck. It would seem that one "precaution" would have been a drain or sump.

The corvette buried under a grocery store was up here in Maine. From what I remember it was dry and had an acess hole to check it periodically. Everyone thought the fiberglass would blister.. it was the first series vette and was buried under a Sampson's grocery store. Was the owner's wifes car ..

It's like pulling a car from the lake... that thing has been sitting submerged off an on for years...

  30. I heard that was in a sealed/unused room of that grocery store, not underneath. And it was NICE
