First off, I'm an old fart, 70, and still chasing the gals, building fast cars, BSing about cars, bench racing, and driving way too fast sometimes! The username comes from my days on the dirt ovals of the Southeast, when I had lots more dents in the front bumper than the back, not from "Candy, little girl?". Although I must admit to still having a liking for the pretty women. An angel I ain't! I'm divorced, live alone (most of the time), and a machinist retired from a major airline. I have a stand alone, commercially zoned 1600 sq. ft. shop that I own free and clear just like my home and another rental house are also paid for. So life is comfortable and good. The shop, even @ 1600 sq. ft, has room for only 2 cars, the rest is filled with machine tools, welders (including tig), and other fabricating equipment. So, I'm pretty well eqipped to do about anything I want to a piece of metal. And a lifetime of doing it for a living and as a hobby has given me the skills to use this stuff. Now, if my health and energy level hold out, I'm building my final, and I hope my best Hot Rod. It's a 30-31 Brookville Roadster replica, building it as a fenderless hi-boy. Has replica 32 frame, pinched in the rear and flattened on top to fit the 31 body. Transverse rear leaf spring with a 9" rear, 4 speed from 72 Mustang with a Jeep top cover for the old time floorshift, a Lakewood bellhousing, McCloud 25# steel flywheel, 11" McCloud clutch and pressure plate. All this is to be propelled by the usual SBC, but with Trick Flow aluminum heads, etc. Walker radiator and 32 grill shell and grill insert from Brookville. Steered by an original 39 banjo wheel cut down to 15.5" with a new rim, early Ford column, inputting to a repro Vega box. Front end is all chrome and stainless, including the drilled and dropped axle and the Posey's leaf spring. That is, all except the batwings and the hairpin radius rods, and when I diss***emble for paint, etc before final ***embly, they will go out for chroming. Front brakes are 12" Ford truck, with finned aluminum Buick drums. Rears are 10" Ford. Dash is narrowed 35 Ford with a glove compt. The jeweled, or engine turned, insert carries 6 S-W gauges. I have a chopped windshield frame, polished SS, and the frame for the top, chopped to match. Since these tops look like Fido's *** when folded down, my plan is to build it ridgid and removable, sort of like a leadsled "Carson" top. I bought most of this from a younger guy I have known since he was a child. He has decided he has too many irons in the fire, also has a Model A "stripdown", a 34 Ford 5 window, a 34 Ford pickup, and a 40 Ford tudor. So far I've been refining what I bought to my tastes and needs, mainly trying to arrange stuff to fit my 6'3" 240# body! Installed a seat from a Dodge van, the middle seat from a 3 seat mini van. Used 65 Mustang seat tracks and steel billet adaptors that I made up on my mill. So far I've made quite a bit of use of my machines on this project! Even had to remake some body mount hardware to keep the seat as close to the floor as possible. Spent yesterday at the swap meet in Moultrie, GA, bought a Pro 15 body rotisserie rom Accessible systems to more easily get to the body underside for painting and sealing, etc. Hope to recover some of the cost renting it to locals for their projects after I finish using it. Also picked up some Borgeson stuff to finish out the steering hook up. I'll be getting over to the shop shortly to see what I can get done today. I'm sure I'll be in and out here, looking for advice on what to use in the way of the more modern paints, sealants, etc., and ideas for the myriad of stuff left to do. Thanks for the forum, just found it today. Dave
Welcome from one old fart to another. There are several guys in Georgia in the HAMB. They seem to be pretty helpful. Some have been helpful to me already. Good bunch. Thanks, BOBBY FORD
Welcome from huntsville alabama.. I can recall when griffin ga was far from atlanta now its a surburb.. You must have raced with Rosco and that Head guy that liked to get in fights. Sounds like a nice car.. Are you a member of the garhof?? Bobby...
Bobby, Yes, I'm a member of GARHOFA (GA Auto Racing Hall Of Fame ***oc.) and Roscoe Smith is a good friend of mine and has been since way before either of us got into dirt racing. Mike Head was racing in one of the lower cl***es (Cadet, IIRC) when I gave it up. Roscoe and I and a couple of other good friends went to the annual Peach Bowl Reunion (once a 1/4 mile track in ATL) last Sunday. People there who were involved in racing all the way back into the 30s! Dave
I too am a charter member.. I had my car {{34 ford flathead sedan}} in the moonshine festival garhof booth several years ago..
Welcome. There's getting to be so many old men on here that pretty soon I won't be the only guy who wonders who Mike Ness is..
