The brake set up that you have from jamco is a reproduction of a 68 mustang set up. Jamco maybe running out of granada spindles and use these in it's place. The granada rotors and calipers and pads are less expensive when they need to be replaced. This set up from jamco should perform just as well as granadas. I would like to see them provide backing plates or dust sheilds with their kit.

Thanks, I am glad to get some of this sorted out. Nascardave the measurement from the lower to upper ball joint on the inside face is 6 3/4". Is there an after market backing plate or dust shield I can get for this?

The measurement I need is where the lower ball joint enters the spindle. It is a tapered hole, I need the measurement of the widest part of the hole. I will try to locate you a set of dust shields. New ones are on back order. I will try to locate some good used ones.

It is roughly 3/4 of an inch across at the widest part. Thanks for your help.

So I have mounted the spindle on the car. The strange thing was the one marked R had to go on the left for the tie rod to be in the right location. Though I was able to confirm this was correct since the lower and upper spindle are different diameters. The larger being on the bottom.

The problem if it is a problem as you can see in the photo below is that after I backed the nut off. That I have run out of thread however I still have a bit of space left on the ball joint before the base. If this OK? If not has anyone run into this? I measured the original spindle and it is quite a bit bigger. The upper ball joint fits perfectly.

I ran into the same problem when using Grenada spindles on my 54 Wagon. I made some teflon bushings to fit under the nut and take up the space. I think that this a common occurance when you have to ream the lower joint on the spindle. Yours may be different but they came like that didn't they, already reamed ?

Was this bushing something you made or bought? Being that it is conical shaped I am not to worried about it coming loose more to keep the dust plates down on the ball joints.

It appears that you have 1 1/2 drop spindles. The space between the spindle and the boot on the ball joint can be made up with some medium density foam rubber. Just a little pressure on the boot to help retain grease. The space above the spindle and the nut can be taken up with a couple of washers. You need to make sure that the hole in the nut and the ball joint line up to install cotter pin.

Hey JeffB2, not trying to ignore your question, just going wwwaaaaayy back through some of my notes about the self adjusters on my 56. Seems to me that the items needed are 61 or 62 Ford parts which should still be available at NAPA etc, but will let you know for sure. I think that i may have the part #s but not sure.

OK boys & girls, this is what you need to convert your 56 over to self adjusting brakes. Use Wagner #283 shoes, as they are drilled for the self adjusters, or drill your existing shoes. Then get Wagner self adjuster kit F98370/1 and Wagner combikit F87351. That should be all you need.

Ok I got the ball joint taken apart and put back together with washers. I used some rubber washers on the bottom and a lock washer up top.

I found a set of dust shields on e-pay # 290449713570 $33 plus shipping. Ask them if they come with the center retaining rings? If not I may have a set. This should finish off your disc brake kit.

They go on before the rotors and they are held on with 3 short 5/16th bolts. Please let me know if you need the retaining rings.

Ordered my parts from Jamco at the beginning of January and have yet to see them. Called many times but they never answer the phone. Emailed and got a "we promise" note a month ago saying they'll be out the following week....still waiting:mad: NEVER AGAIN with them, why anyone buys from them I don't know.

Three days ago we got with Mark here on the HAMB "Scarebird" and ordered their disk brake adapter kit...it was here in two days. Uses late 80s GMC 1500 calipers and continental rotors. Has a list of all parts needed from the auto store with part numbers. It will wind up being MUCH cheaper than JAMCO.

Sorry to vent but this situation is just stupid and I will spread the word as much as I can.

Raybug RCI sells them and you can buy them from other dealers then Jamco you will have to contact them. That is what I did, I can't recall the company I purchased them through other then that they specialized in Chevy parts. The part number for the shock is 55-R230. All of the parts I bought and used to do my rebuild are on my blog that covers
    My build. http://1hot54.blogspot.com/

NTX you aren't the only one with problems with Jamco. I do have to say with all of the issues I have had they have addressed everyone of them and tried to resolve it. It doesn't mean that I would do business again with them. Just that they have recognized they are falling down on their customer support.
