Guys - Working on adapting a set of Wilwood disc brakes to some hubs, neither the inside boss or the outside of the hub flange will locate the hats for the discs. I'm installing larger wheel studs (pressed in) and the knurled section of the studs is much longer on the studs than the thickness of the flange of the hub. Is it OK to turn the extra length of the knurl down on a lathe to better locate the hats? Or should I turn some steel rings on the lathe to positively locate the hats on the center boss of the hubs, I've seen something like that done to adapt Buick drums? Or should I do both? How much clearance should be left between the hat and the hub boss or the hat and the studs? 1/2" studs I think the holes in the hats are .520" Later Rick Bender Sunny Southern WI
i would advise against turning down a lug stud. that is simply asking for trouble. go with a wheel spacers or, get different lugs that have a shorter knurled surface than the ones you have now.
The most positive method is to center both the hat and the wheel to the hub. Have them made to a press fit to the hub and you can heat them up like a cam gear and slip them on.
Dorman lists several differant studs. Turning down the extra length to fit the hat hole diameter is what I'd do. I drilled my wheel spacers with .005 clearance. http://www.dormanproducts.com/catalog/hardware2006/143-148_Sec10_Part3.pdf
