Installing disc brakes on my model a which has 46 style cross steering and newly installed half rack and pinion steering. Question is, where to locate calipers, front, top, or rear. Presently they are at top but looks like the bleeder is to low. Please advise.
YES!!!!! Please tell me ..... why do you need disc brakes on a Model A?? How is that traditional? Period correct? Is this a Street Rod?
I'm going to ***ume you have a hotter than stock motor and want to stop faster and safer. That's precisely the reason I have disc brakes on my Model A's. It depends on the brackets and calipers you have, but I had the same problem on one of my cars. I had installed my caliper brackets on the wrong sides. I swapped left for right and that fixed the placement. My calipers are at the top/front, or 1 o'clock position. Won't make sense if you have a non traditional (digital) watch or clock.
BC Texas, don't let these guys get you down. I'd be willing to bet >50% of the cars owned by forum members have disc brakes. Look at others' builds, bunches of disc brakes.
That only means that 50% of the people don't have traditional cars. The calipers go behind the axle center of that helps about 10 ocloock.
I respectfully submit that this is the "traditionally styled" (not period correct) portion of the board..... I think there is some leeway in this section of the forum. A lot of us want the old look and don't mind some modern pieces, especially those which are safety related. Brakes, tires, seat belts, mirrors come quickly to mind.
Better yet find a rare set of "Mirage Fast-Stop" brakes....... Build thread:http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=862612&highlight=32+spitfire Todd-32 Spitfire High Noon Speed Shop
This is the traditionally Styled section, so what's the beef, being that said, im more traditional, but if your running a bb with a blower or any thing with some good HP ,id want it to stop. Isn't safety part of this hobby also, but when it come to independent suspension on any open wheel traditional or traditionally styled car i will draw that line--Its fugly and don't belong
Most are set-up like this, just behind 12 o'clock like ****** said. Just keep the bleeders at the top. The three things I feel are the most important are brakes, steering, and seat belts. Drive safe.
Properly arched and adjust Ford mechanical brakes will stop on a dime. If you feel you need disc brakes, you might as well put in a 5 point seatbelt and wear a helmet, get some airbags, etc
