Guys - I'm doing a front disc conversion on a '52 Willys Aero, using a kit meant for early AMC cars. It's an almost perfect fit, except a steering arm is the direct path of a caliper bolt. After trying a few things, the only way this is going to work is if I flip the caliper adapter over, which means the caliper will be in front of the spindle, instead of behind it. My dumb question is; will this make a difference in braking (safety)? Thanks!

As long as the bleed screw is pointing, mostly..."up"...no, no problem at all. That will be fine.

Just verify at full lock and compression the caliper does not come in contact with anything on the frame/suspension/etc.

The only issue I can see may be related to the position of the bleeder screw and possible interference with something else. As long as the system can be bled, and the re positioned caliper doesn't interfere with anything else, all should be good.

  7. Be sure the flex hose is not tight at left and right steering lock.

It won't make any difference to the braking, but if you want both sides to look the same, do the same to the other mount bracket (mount it out front) and swap calipers L to R to get the bleeder on top, many factory cars have calipers out front..

There is no engineering justification, other than materials conservation, for one caliper position, or another, so long as the bleeder is on top.

Calipers and brackets are dumb pieces of metal.

They have no idea what side they belong on.

You can always unbolt caliper, clamp piston in and hold caliper up and bleed with nipple pointing up.

Or take the much simpler route. Mount the right caliper on the left side and vice versa, and Bob's yer uncle!

You do realize that in most cases the right and left calipers are mirror images of each other, right?

I had an uncle Bob also.
Funny story. Fresh out of high school I went to a auto tech school in Grandview MO. We went to school at night and worked during the day. The school would find us jobs in the automotive industry. My first job was working at Taylor cable Co. It was an assembly line type of work and I hated it a would bug the counselor daily to get me a job somewhere else. Finally they got me a job at one of the Midas muffler shops. On my first day on the job all the guys were around this one car working on the front brakes. I ask what was going on, they said the replaced the calipers and couldn't bleed them out. I took one look and said you have the calipers on the wrong side with the bleeders pointing down. I was never very popular after that. Guess they didn't like some young kit showing them up. It wasn't long that they moved to the Midas shop down at 30th and Troost in KC.

Ha, I AM Uncle Bob to 9 nieces and nephews, hence "Bob's yer uncle" is my favorite UK idiom! And my dad is Bob too! Dad and I 15 years ago.

Have you actually taken the time to read through some of these brake theory threads?

Is it close enough, that you can just bend the steering arm ?

    If not, move the caliper.
As long a the bleeder is on top, no problem.

Yes, I have. But I seem to get put off with all the drama and move on......
Your quoted stuff at the end of your posts is a good example of why I lose interest.....

    "BJR POSTED – 24JUL2024"
"The pads do not retract, they are knocked back a few thousands by the rotor runout."

    Not necessary, not cool.;)

Did you actually read and understand what he posted? That is the type of incorrect info that is passed onto others and is why no one can seem to understand correct braking theory.

And then he/she/whatever tells me to move on?

I could post dozens of examples.

But in all actuality, I get a big chuckle out of some of the stuff posted here.

OH, BTW ... There is an IGNORE OPTION you can use here to block my posts out. No sense in drawing your BVD's up. I have no interest in trying to BE COOL, whatever that is ...

Yes, I read what he said, and it was not correct. Still not a reason for the response he got.
And, man, I have no need to ignore you, no matter how tempting it is. That would be rude......
