more questions for reasons yet to be revealed....lets says ya got some 49-54 chevy spinldes w/disc brakes on em, is there some way you can make the disc brakes actually not look gay? Since they're there I wouldn't mind using them since they stop better if I can make em look more "traditional", I dont' mind drums except when they get hot and don't wanna stop worth a ****. Just trying to figure out what I should run...I want a certain look, but i dont' want to ever be iffy about whether I'm going to be able to stop or not....
...about all a guy can do is "de-emphasize" them by painting everything flat black. Personally, I would'nt let it bother me....as safety should be #1 one everyones list.
yeah I know it's safety first, but I've seen them before where you couldn't really tell they were discs. They had some kind of backing plates on them or something. Just trying to scrounge up more info...
guess I should've named this post somethign sbout disc brake covers...I found a couple of websites that sell what I'm talking abotu but they're really pricey, wonder how hard it would be to fab some up? check these out http://www.rowdysrodshop.com/
Why do you worry that some one will think disc brakes are gay? This is more of a safety issue that what some idiot thinks.
I like the way they stop, but not the way they look, so I'm trying to get the stopping I like, with a look I'll be happier with....
first of all, what are you building? If it has fenders, who cares. If it doesnt, who cares? I will say that if you run old bias tires disks dont help much more. The tire footprint is too small to make a difference. If you get the settup for free, run it.... who cares? Will I ever run disk brakes again after all the snickering from my jack*** pals?.... no. sorry. I had them on my 34 for a while for my wife but it turns out they dont help much on bias tires. Plus she normally doesnt hit the brakes before she runs into things.
just run them for what they are. don't try to hide them. I've got late sixties GM discs on early fifties Chevy spindles on the fast car but the next one will be slower and built to a pre disc style. deffinately drums goin' on there. unless some Kinemonts fall outta the sky Paul
i have disc brakes on this car....along with power steering and power brakes ,,, dont really give a **** if nobody aproves... ..now,on a fenderless ride ,,, thats a differnet story....
People look at your car as a whole and don't notice discs or drums until they are up close. And the simple truth is, not many will really notice the brakes cuz they're enthralled with the one of a kind engine and killer paint. Whatever works. They're both completely acceptable in todays rodding world.
even if they dont' work well with bias plys, I was still thinking of using them cos they're there. Unless I could sell or trade em for some working drum brakes. It would be a fenderless car we're talking about, if they were covered up I wouldnt' give a ****. I just know that I dont' like it when I've been in older cars and the drums got hot and the car would not want to stop, and I dont' want that to happen on what I build...
Are they setup for a Ford axle? I've been thinkin for awhile about puttin discs on my A and I got a set of early Juice brakes. I like discs for when we play rally car in the hills back home, but then again I probably wont do that **** in the A. -Jesse
[ QUOTE ] is there some way you can make the disc brakes actually not look gay? [/ QUOTE ] I would say any FAKE covers would make them even gayer. Use the real thing or fix up the discs to look right. Im sure pro race cars ran front discs in the 50`s, why not replicate that look? My 2c.
How is the rest of the car, if everything else on your car is from a certain era then why not stick with juice brakes, it seems that there are a lot of nice cars out there that get screwed up "looking wise" by a single part, as far as a safety issue if you set your drum brakes up right you shouldn't have any problems. "Who uses brakes anyway"
I'm with you ****. I have disk breaks all around on my sedan. By golly when I want to stop...I WANT TO STOP!!!! Course I'm a GOLDCHAINER and don't really give a BLEEP what anyone else thinks!!! Hows that for at***ude. (I learned it from **** and his dad)
Doesn't some company make a setup that looks like finned buick drums with discs completely hidden inside...???
That's cool that's why I like going to meets where they don't let that stuff in, they have to park across the street. Nothing but real
[ QUOTE ] Doesn't some company make a setup that looks like finned buick drums with discs completely hidden inside...??? [/ QUOTE ] soCal speedshop makes these... youve got disc's sitting around, use them. unless you want a period correct hotrod... either way, drums will stop your car, a hotrod can be up to half the weight of the car a pair of drums originally came off of. user error will account for 90% (or more) of all problems
[ QUOTE ] as far as a safety issue if you set your drum brakes up right you shouldn't have any problems. "Who uses brakes anyway" [/ QUOTE ] Depends on what you're going to do with it. Just cruising around and normal everyday driving, my drilled Drums and vented backing plates on the F100 are fine. Full speed stoplight to stoplight blasts are a different situation though. I have way more Horsepower than Stopping power. I guess thats partially a function of weight too, though. A '65 F100 isn't exactly light.
Please forgive me being young and ignorant, but how much worse are drums? I've yet to have a vehicle with four wheel drums, so I don't know. I am planning on running them on my 34 chev sedan tho. With that light of a car should I really worry?
drums work fine as long as there is enough braking surface and they don't get too hot. hard braking with under size drums and shoes can very quickly feel like no brakes at all. early Mopar drums for instance are quite small and if you were trying to stop a trailer on a long downhill grade the shoes would glaze over and not do their job too well. but large well cooling drums on a lighter vehicle would work fine, like the Buick finned aluminum drums on a 30's Ford car for example. Paul
well, how do the 49-54 chevy drums work on a late 20's early 30's car? Since those are the spindles I'll have that's what I'd probaly use if I decide to go the juice brakes route.

I'll read anything. Anyways, it details cutting pieces out of early Ford backing plates and using them to disguise disc brakes---they actually look good and not at all gay IMHO If you want, pm me and I can send you photocopies of the article.

Let me say again, that I dont' give two ****s what other people think about it. I personally don't like the way disc brakes look on a non-fendered car, but I do like how they perform. So I was looking for a way that I could have the performance on discs AND be happy with how they look, but **** it, I'll figure something out on my own...
Switchblade - the older disc setups had small puck calipers - I'm ***uming that the setup you have is like a Speedway setup with midsize GM calipers. The best way to make the setup look good on a fenderless car is to use a metric caliper - something smaller in size. I'd say just use what you have, and if anyone says anything just tell them you need them to stop after a ten second run at the strip. I'm using 4 wheel Willwood discs on my 32, and could care less what others think about the correctness, because it WILL be a 10 sec. car. Mutt
well i have no clue how fast the thing will end up being, I dont' even have the stuff here yet. I'm just trying to plan things so I can just do the damn work when it gets here, without having to plan & work at the same time...I'll figure something out, if I don't like the way they look, I'll scrounge up some old backing plates and figure out a way to make something. I just htought someone else on here might've done what I was thinking...
