If any of you are traveling through Hershey,Pa. stop by the AACA museum. The current display is called 3 Dog Garage, cars are owned by Ross Myers of Boyertown, Pa. He's the owner of the gold '35 Ford 3 window that won the Ridler award. Also there is the green Ricky Nelson '32 that was at Pebble Beach a few years ago. And another custom '35 and a '40, and a hotrod '32. I think he owns 14 cars on display. The display will be there until March. Before Christmas there's a really neat toy train setup too.

Doug, Not to steal the thread, but has anyone been to the new museum down by the airport in Philly? I saw a write up on it- American Underslung, a couple Alfas, etc. Looks like a definite visit is in store the next time I make it up... provided I can stay on the road...
That 40 Merc custom is from Detroit and I first saw it at the very first Autorama, and the last time I saw it was in the 1958 Autorama that I was in. Won best full custom year after year at the Detroit Autorama. It was the car that set my heart on fire for cool cars. Bodywork by Bill Hines, jet black and razor straight.
Zach, the motorcycle display is probably a permanent thing, like the buses. It brought in much needed money for the AACA, but may wind up ruining the AMCA as it's not very popular with the members. Many of the board members have already resigned, there are lots of unanswered questions about how the aggreement happened.
That sounds a lot like the personal collection of a worldclass surgeon, is there a gray 1911 MERCER in there as well?
mac a friend of mine when there this summer.. he really enjoyed it.. I hope to make it there soon.. Looks like we need to do a trip to the 3 dog garage... wow s
Yup! and a National... wonder if it's Grundy's on loan (his came through my old boss's shop every once in a while). I'll look at the article again tonight.
Sounds like a good enough excuse to bundle up and drive your roadster up to Hershey.....or....maybe not.
Mac, you're talking about the Simmione? collection, all race cars from the articles I've read. Yes '37, there's a Mercer. He's the guy that owns the missing Cobra coupe that was talked about here a few years ago. After everyone fought in court he was awarded the car. Several friends and I have a winter excersion planned to see this stuff. There's also a new transportation museum in Allentown I need to see, a little of everything from motorcycles to trains. Anyone been there yet? BTW, the AMCA motorcycle display will change to racers around March. That should be good.
This is the 1911 MERCER that is in the Simmione collection, took the photo in 1961. The car lived its life in Ridgefield, Ct. up untill the mid 1960's, never had fenders, belived to be a factory race car. Local plumber found it on a house call in the late 1930's and restored it to the condition it is in to this day. He lived one street over from were I am how, to this day I look in the garage when I drive by and remember the days it sat in there under a cover.
Larry, there's a new sheriff in town or should I say new Exec. Dir. at the museum. I'm hoping all the best for HER, that she's able to get the place headed in the right direction. And she's a car girl!
Wow, wish I lived closer! Sounds like an amazing display! The Fred Steele car is a favorite on mine, prob the best Eastern car EVER, IMHO.
HER Name is Holly and she's a personal friend of mine from here in Detroit. Please tell her Denise said hi and I hope to get to the museum in May when I'm in PA for the Jalopy Showdown.
Funny to see this thread. My girlfriend and I took a trip out to Hershey to go to the chocolate factory, and while I was there I dragged her to the AACA museum. Great museum with lots of cool stuff. I'll see if I can post some pics
This car was owned, for many years, by my good friend, Gordon Barrett, and it lived here in INDY on Gasoline Alley. Although Gordon would never say it officially, all facts, including the special wheel hubs and the underlying blue paint, below the current brush painted charcoal gray, indicated that this car was one of two factory Mercer race cars that ran in the very first Indy 500. I had the pleasure of some laps in this car at the Milwaukee Miller meet a few years ago. Gordon sold this car to Simeone, a couple of years ago, on the condition that the car never be restored or modified, to which Simeone wholeheartedly agreed.
Road trip idea. Go to Posies open house on Saturday 01/10/09 and then to AACA museum. see www.posiesrodsandcustoms.com
