Distributer for a Y-Block

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Mitchell de Moor, Dec 29, 2011.

  1. Well, I am looking for a new dizzy for my 1956 Ford w/ a 272 Y-Block. I have very little mechanical know how and will be time limited. I was hoping for a new petronix (sp?) type dizzy that I could just plug and play. I have always had a hard time with points on my current (stock distributer).

My motor is stock except for Thunderbird ramhorns, dual exhaust, a spin on oil filter and a GM 1-wire.

I am not to concerned about being traditional under the hood as my car 100% looks traditional on the outside. I am also never going to have my hood open at a show unless I need to fix something.

I was hoping to just order one from Speedway, Jegs, Summit, or even an allience member.

I will be driving my car from Ottawa to Santa Maria in May so I would like the most reliable dizzy I could find.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Also here is a picture of the motor...

  2. Those petronic kits are pretty reliable and easy to install.

  3. You need a 57 and up dizzy

  4. I also needed a new carb. I have been told to get a '57 and up carb for my car as well. Will a '57 and up carb bolt up to my stock '56 Manifold?

Also do you think the MSD one I just posted would be a better option than a '57 and up?

    Thanks?

Sorry for my stupidity but besides doing a couple minor bolt on mods to SBC's I know nothing about engines.

Unless you are building a streetrod, I'd either buy a factory rebuilt dist and install a Pertronix unit or buy one already done from Bubba and save a bunch of money. Personally I hate the look of those billet distributors and especially their prices. JMHO

  6. As stated above I don't really give two s***s about looks. My car already looks like ass under the hood:D

Where would I go about getting one from Bubba?

I would be interested. I am more for function over form under the hood. It's a custom and will never be seen.

i bought a 57-up reman dizzy from napa and stayed with points works just fine as long as you have the points adjusted right and dont ever leave the key in the on position to burn the points up.......if they werent reliable why would so many y-blocks still be driving with the same points dizzy for years?just carry a extra set of points in the toolbox in the trunk just in case something does happen and you should be good to go

and if you really want some pro advice on y-blocks you might want to ask questions here:

My 55 has a warmed 312 with a Blue Thunder intake, a 600 Edelbrock, and a 57 diizy with a GMC Bubba curve, and a Pertronix. If you buy a rebuilt dizzy from NAPA, send it to GMC bubba for a cuve and a Pertonix, the toatl cost will be about half what the first link showed. On any Pertronix I like to use the coil they sell with it. Call Bubba, he is the best and very resonably priced.

get a t bird dizzy from napa new or reman. buy the pertronix on amazon save a boat load and it will be way less headache than anything else your looking at and will work fine . get the pertronix coil while your at it . if you have problems with the pertronix call them and they will walk you though it ...
easiest most simple way ... oh and do it one thing at a time . get the dizzy in and running , then work on the carb. if you do all of it at once and you are a beginner it might be overwhelming to tune the thing.

as far as a carb , get an edelbrock 4 barrel and an adaptor from napa to your manifold . way easy..

  11. Thanks, I will look into it.

Thanks, I am just overseas visiting family now but will call that number when I get back.

I live in Canada so all that shipping I could probably just buy one off Bubba for cheaper.

I am not sure about the Edelbrock 4 barrel. Won't that be to much cfm for my small little 272?

you can buy the napa distributer in Canada, i'd just run the points, i have a 272 as well in my 55, i also have a 57 intake that i have a 600 holley on waiting for me to install it, your intake will take the large flange carbs?

  13. Thanks, good to know about Napa Canada. I hate ordering things from the States it kills me funds wise. I am not sure which carbs my intake will take. I'm not really an engine guy.:D

  14. We (PerTronix) do not offer a complete distributor for Y Blocks. The suggestion of getting a hold of GMC Bubba and having him build you a distributor with a PerTronix module is a very good one.

  15. Call Bubba! His dizzys rock!

here are some pics of intakes, the early one takes the small carb and th later one takes the large carb, you can use an adapter on the early intake so you can run a later carb.

I'd go with the "small" carb..... good street manners make it much more fun to drive.

272 incher...a 500 cfm is a good carb. (Not to mention less expensive to buy). No need to overdo it. I agree with getting the ign up and working correctly,....Then go for the intake and carb.

You have two posts that started on the 29th, and are basically asking the same questions. If what you say above is true, why would you want to get into a complete carb, manifold and distributor change-over, when a simple tuneup may be all that's needed. What kind of hard time have you had with points, and why do you need a new carb? It would be a lot cheaper and faster to pay a knowlegable mechanic to check the loadomatic distributor and diaphragm, install new points/condenser and set proper (27 degrees) dwell, along with checking out and possibly rebuilding the stock Holley 94 (?) carb at this time. Just wondering.
The upgrades that have been suggested are for the most part very good, but the '57-up 4-barrel manifold is hard to find and expensive, along with all the other new replacement parts. The big issue is the time and expertise you state you don't have to perform the changes. Seems like you're making a fairly simple tuneup into a major project. Not knocking, just sayin'. :)

  20. Well, before leaving for my California trip I am going to have a friend help me instal the above items. I have purchased everything including the '57 manifold (not that expensive). except the distributer. My friend who will be helping me out builds cars in his spair time and just fineshed a 1955 Ford.

  25. No, I am currently overseas visiting family. Then I will be back to Etobicoke, ON. My car is in Morrisburg, ON. I won't be picking it up until I am done school in April. Then I will thrash on it to get ready for Santa Maria. Then I'm driving down for the West Coast Kustoms Cruisin' Nationals.

  26. You may need to send the intake back - the one shown isn't a B ......

above is an "A".....below is a "B"....the one you want is an ECZ-9425-B

or maybe demand a cheaper price .....those little ones go for less than $100 a lot of times.

My 292 was really happy when I upgraded to a 57 distributor (mechanical advance older units don't have that feature) w/Pertronix, amazing how much better it ran and I do know how to set up points. 500cfm carb on 57 intake better than the 600 double pumper too X10. Old Y-block, run forever, most of the time.
