I have one of these coils (Accel #140001 super coil) wired on my GTO. Currently wiring is as shown in the link and useing a petronics system in stead of the original points.

    http://www.jegs.com/InstallationInstructions/100/110/110-140001.pdf

It worked fine for a (year 1/2 installed, but only drive this car once every other weekend in the summer months), but took a **** last Saturday night. I called a mechanic / race car friend and he said my problem is the wiring, that I need 12 volts to the coil.

He said loose the supplied resistor and the factory wire from the ignition (came with built in resistor in factory wiring?) and find a location (wire connection) that has 12 volts when the ignition is on. Then use that wire to the coil or I will continue to burn them up????

Anyone with knowledge jump in here!

You may have cooked the Pertronix! Depending on the Pertronix that you are using, you have to use the coil that has the proper resistance that Pertronix requires for that application. Your instructions that came with the Pertronix unit will tell you the proper resistance coil to use.
    Good Luck!

Which one of our PerTronix Ignitors do you have? This makes a big difference.
That coil has .7 ohm resistance built in. That will work with our Ignitor II or III without the resistor, but if you have the original Ignitor you will need to use the ballast resistor that the coil came with. My guess is you have the Original Ignitor and need to run the resistor.

Don, I can't find the rec for the pertronics, how do I tell a Ignitor I from a II or a III?
