Hey im building a 35 5 window coupe and i have a sbc 350that is going in it and im curious what the best distributor would be for the setup that isn't pushing 300.00 i was was told about a pertornics because iwould give it enough clearance because of the firewall but im not sure my dad had a dualpointin there originally and it doesn't look like its salvageable. any advice on a good set up would be great
You can find sort of old mallory dual point distributors at swap meets, etc pretty reasonable. Make sure it has all the parts! the caps and stuff for the early ones are hard to find. Personally, I'd go for something like this...it'll work great, it's cheap, and it looks right. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/RPT0/GM10.oap remember, we used to have point ignition in everything, and there were millions of cars on the road, driving to work and shopping every day.
i want to say that the gear is locked up in the shaft the car was sitting outside for 26 years without a cover over the engine compartment. so a point distributor would still be a good coice? i heard from people that moving up to electronics like the msd billet or the hei's work better so i wasnt sure
You can spend lots of money if you want. You're new here, this is a traditional hot rod forum, so we tend to like the old fashioned solution to a problem. Maybe this is what you're after? or maybe not? If you can show us some pictures of the car in question, we can help further
ill try and upload some they are on my phone. im looking for the easiest to work on over all id prefer to have less electrical to deal with like with the motor im sticking with a holley 650 double pumper instead of upgrading to electronic fuel injection when i built the motor i ported and polished and upgraded to a 274 cam so if a point style distributor would wort the best ill go with that.
I bet you can bring that old dizzy back to life. Search GMC Bubbas posts. He is from Indy and his main business is Ignition. Tons of good info in his threads.
i think im going to try to rebuild it wheres the best place to get a rebuild kit for a mallory dual point? and is there a good place to go to for the points? cause apparently the auto shops say that they dont carry them anymore.
First you need to figure out which mallory distributor it is...there are several versions they made over the years. There were at least three different types of caps and rotors, and at least two different types of points. They usually had a tag riveted or screwed onto the distributor with a model and some other info. Again, pictures help. Neat looking car!
I seem to remember reading about MSD saying that there dist had the accuracy of points??? So I always wondered why change something that worked.
For 60 bucks or so, Squirrel's suggestion is hard to beat, for street use. Plug & play. I bought new point(s) & condenser for a 37K series Accel last year, and had damn near that in them alone.
From what I saw when working in the shop belonging to the "go to" guy for having your Mallory distributor set up in Central Texas in the early 70's They tend to get worn rather quickly compared to stock oem distributors and without access to a distributor machine setting one up is a pain in the **** compared to other distributors. Yes it can be done but to get the max benefit out of it you have to set them up right. I can't see spending the money for an exotic distributor and ignition setup for a street car unless you just have so much money it doesn't matter what you spend. Putting one in a race car because it gets you those extra mph cuts those extra tenths in the quarter or on a lap is what it's all about though. Personally if the stock distributor with the the cap with the window fit in the car that is what I'd run it has been around since the late 50's and with a Pertronix kit in it you have the looks of a point style distributor with electronic ignition and with a set of points and a condenser and condenser holder in the glove box or tool box you have backup if something fails. Still there is nothing wrong with points and I have filed the points of a guys truck that had quit in the middle of Wyoming with a worn emery stick and set the points with a match book and got him going while on a road trip.
Coil out put is dependent on coil input. A moveable set of points is only good for a max of 3 amps. A good electronic ignition will carry two to there times the amps
