hi all, started stripping down my 331 caddy for paint and found the "oiler tube" on the side of the delco remy distributor......, i looked everywhere, and cant find any info on how much it should be oiled, what oil, and how often???......these caddy parts are rare as rocken horse shit down here in Australia, so it would be nice to keep it lubed. Any info would be awesome, cheers, Ratcad

I was taught to use the dip stick for a few drops when you change the oil. When you change the oil and the oil is still clean before you put the stick back in, let it drip a few drops into the tube. A couple of drops every 3000 miles is all it takes. I think that they are so cool.

All generators use plain bearings and require regular lubrication. Original specs called for 2 or 3 drops of 30 motor oil in each bearing at oil change time which was every thousand miles back then. There are 2 bearings one in front and one in back.

I prefer to use synthetic motor oil. Buy a quart of the thickest grade they sell and keep a special oil can for such jobs. You will be surprised how often you use it around the shop.

Do not over oil. Excess oil can get inside the generator and gum up the brushes. Do not tighten the fan belt too tight. You should be able to bend the belt 3/4 of an inch to 1 inch in the middle of its run with moderate thumb pressure before it is completely tight. Plain bearings remember?

Normal life of a generator was 20 to 30 thousand miles between overhauls. Use synthetic oil and do not overtighten the belt and you will get at least that out of one.
