Just some junky old trailer wheels I ran accross - but those centers sure look like the famous "Milk Truck" wheels to me? That extra ring is throwing me though. Thought I saw a different Ford wheel on a thread not too long ago and it was decided that meant it had split rims? How exactly do these work? Regardless I think they will be worth snagging... for no other reason than to pirate the centers and add new hoops.
I hear you. But it's got to be all about timing on this deal. Might be a little while before I have them.
I'll give you $12.00 Canadian for 'em. Those centers are looking just like "Divco's" Are they 18" diameter wheels? You can get 18" wheel hoops from tractor supply in 4" wide steel.
Kevin #1 those are Divco wheels and you should own them. #2 Those are split rims. That extra ring splits and comes off then you pull the tire and tube off. Common for comercial wheels but very dangerous for the tire guy on remount. Easier to show you than to tell you. Upside is that a different rim can be mounted to those centers and you can have a really cool set or pair of wheels for your hooptie.
Now, check this out: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=017&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=270072499214&rd=1,1 I looked at these and thought they were split rims. Not being a DIVCO wheel guru, are these the Holy Grail, or was there a non-split rim wheel that is more desirable? I'd hate to think this winning bidder paid that kind of $dough$ for the wrong thing . So this leads me to believe that DIVCOs are split rims. Anyone here know for sure????
Are all Divco rims highly sought after? My buddy has one in his wrecking yard although it belongs to someone else. I could probably buy it for $100.00 s****.....
I was under the impression the Divco Wheels that everyone wants are the 18: ones, that are used on the Salt, Because then you could use the Surpluss High Speed Indy Tires on them. any other size would be useless?
No..... Hey Kevin.....snag those wheels.....pop the centers out (riveted), and have 'em mounted in 18"x4" hoops....then you'd be set!
I'd leave 'em on the trailer. $2500.00 a pair WTF? Those things are unpleasant , no, fugly looking to say the least! I wouldn't put 'em on my trailer. Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. I just wish I had some to sell!
I'm sure Kevin won't pay that much... It's a "Cool to Have" kinda thing I think. Like collecting art... But I don't think I've seen an actual car that they look good on that wasn't a purpose-built, singular-useage, lakes car. (ie; Bobby's tank)... They throw off the proportions of a small car to my eye.... It would be cool to see them on a big custom...
Buy them!!!!!! If reasonably priced they are worth refurbishing with new non split rims. They look great on hot rod trucks, like SinisterCustoms example(WOW!!) Let's see more pics of that ride!!!
Doesn't look like ****... pretty cool actually. But in your case the wheels aren't being used in the way they originally were in the 50's... I think that is what Kilroy is getting at. And I agree with Kilroy - they look best on cars built purely for racing. Or at least built to represent a car that is purely for racing - but that is a completely different thread. Personally I'd like to have them because due to size availability I think you can actually end up with the tallest Firestone by going with a 17" wheel. 'Stones are relatively cheap and look right. And a taller tire would help out my little roadster on the highway. And that's ultimately what I'm looking for with my roadster - old parts and highway speeds. (100+ mph) What could be more traditional? (right now I'm ***uming the ones I have a line on are 17" as well.)
Yeah, Aaron's car looks like **** too. Looks killer Sinister! Kevin, you lucky SOB. I hope you get them for next to nothing. Is there anything modern that looks somewhat similar?
Take note here: Kilroy did not use the word "****", that was all Sinister Custom. Aaron's car makes a lot more sense with those wheels - race car. The truck is cool, but gives off a completely different vibe to me.
Noted. Is that vibe because it is military themed and not a more period correct example? I think if I had a set, I'd consider some kind of anti-theft mechanism. If someone somewhere is willing to pay that much money for 2, then someone somewhere would be willing to liberate them from you. Just a thought. And not one I'm particular proud of having either...
The wheels were ORIGINALLY made for use on TRUCKS.......so it's 'correct' I guess...... I built my truck around 'em 'cause the wheels have a military (artillary) look to 'em. Was going for a 40's look, but was too much $$$ at the time to rebuild the flatty in my shop, so in went the *cough* SBC. My favorite roadster of all time is Jack Underwoods's '29, grey primer with the red 18" Kelsey Hayes wheels.... And yes....I'm full of ****!
They're neat looking wheels, but why are these so much more desirable than other artillery style wheels? The bolt pattern? I've been picking up the 17" Chevy ones cheap for my '46, is it that no one wants to run a 6 lug rearend? They're a solid rim too. Wouldn't be any harder to put an 18" hoop on them than it is to put one on a 17" split Divco wheel (or any other wheel for that matter)
This kind of thing is interesting. Who, outside of a very small community of a certain segment of the hotrod community, would know what these are and value them as much as those in that small community??.. and how many of these wheels, or similar "valuable to a select few" parts, are out there gathering dust and rust because the owner doesn't know what it is. I suppose anything that is old and rare and has a history like these wheels have a pretty high value. Liberate them mr Lee! We should all keep our eyes open.
I took my truck to the Unfinished Nats before I had it running and EVERYONE at the show wanted to know what kind of wheels they were(and they were car guys)......so the odds of someone wanting to steal them from the parking lot at the store is pretty slim. The general "thief" population would rather have some 'BLING'.....now if these were chrome......hahahahaha!!
Actually, to me both those examples look wierd... They are both nice cars but with the big wheels they look too tall, high, and they make the wheelbase look too short.... Also the proportion between the body and wheel size looks off. I never intended to roll out examples and tear them apart but I will justify my opinion. Also to go along with what Kevin is saying about the purpose or theme of the car, when a car that's designed for the street uses divcos, it kind of clashes with the purpose and your eye gets drawn to them. They kind of jump off the over all 'picture' of the car and demand attention.... Especially on the front. I also think they look best on the back of model Ts because on an A they sort of over-power the rear wheel bead line...
