And if so, what type of sealer do you recommend? Will silicone work, or should I use something like that black gooey avation sealent. Anything special for studs that you don't do with bolts? Thanks. Have a nice day. -Jeff
I use a product called Quicksilver Perfect Seal Sealing Compound. It is a product of Mercury Marine. You should be able get it at any marine supply. It comes in a 16 oz. can with a brush aplicator. A friend of mine who runs a marine service center turned me on to it. There are many marine applications where it is critical that water does not migrate into adjoining areas. This was formulated to do just that. It works great on flathead head studs which are notorious for seeping water. It never hardens so disassembly is a snap. Frank
I dont want to hijack this post, but can someone explain for me the correct way to seal those head studs on the flathead? I've got about 12 that are seeping continually. Do you just load up as much of that Perfect Seal stuff as you can on the bolt and slap it in there? Thanks!
I haven't used anything on my 56 Desoto and have no problems with leaks. If you want to, get some plumbers "thread sealant" from Home Repot.
Yes--ARP recomends - Chase threads in block. Clean threads with electrical cleaner (spray can)leaves no residue.Blow dry Clean threads on stud, blow dry Use ARP thread sealer.Teflon in a tube HAND TIGHTEN studs only. Install head gasket - head and torque to specs. FEDER
