I have a brass item that I want to use as a shift knob, Im thinking I will have to install some kind of bushing and have that threaded. How do I get the bushing permanently affixed to the brass? It is pretty thick but hollow inside. What can I do?
Tap threads into the brass "item" and screw a plug into it. Drill the plug out to the correct diameter and thread it to match your shift lever...
I've got absolutely no experience doing this, but my first thought is to drill a hole where you eventually will want the threads to be and fill the entire cavity with epoxy (or jb weld). Let it set up and then drill/tap.
if you have connections and the "thing" permits, chuck it up in a 4 jaw on a lathe and tap as above, brass doesn't chip very well so have a sharp tool. otherwise, this is the hamb, i'd "weld" a nut in with the JB that will screw onto your shifter arm. the stuff as hokey as it as works great, i used it when making high end walnut shifter knobs to attach to aluminum. brandon
Sorry about the secrecy but I am doing the opposite of my good buddy Mike Draglinks and I am keeping my progress under my hat. All will be revealed later, suffice to say the item in question makes a******in' shifter knob.
drill yer hole and silver solder a threaded steel bung in 'er, or, pack it full of epoxy putty and drill and tap it. Paul
