Hey I know this sounds like a really stupid question but I want to do a lace paint job on the roof of my 63 rambler but I want to keep the paint on the roof the color I have it now, can I just lay the lace and paint? Im new to painting so any help is welcome
Nope, you do need to scuff the top to give some tooth for the paint to hold on to and then shoot some clear over it and you'll be good to go. Be sure to clean it good before scuffing it with grease and wax remover!
Do you know what the paint is that is on there now? Factory, resprayd enamel, urethane? New paints have some pretty serious solvents in them and they can cause old uncatalyzed paints to wrinkle. No can say for sure whether they will or won't in a particular case without knowing exactly what is on there as there are many factors involved but it is good to know the potential risks before doing it.
If your going to put high quality custom paint down I would strip the original paint off and start over.
^^^^^ This! Think about it... all the time and money you are going to spend making the roof look great, on an old foundation(old paint), that you don't know is stable, or will react to the new paint being applied to it.
