Sounds like a similar story, I got mine when I was 13, not that it is a compe***ion. If I grab my hood spears they have some minor movement, not sure if that is necessary or not. After I broke a couple, I started paying way more attention to what I was doing. I am guessing the clips had something to do with price and speed of ***embly, these were just trucks at the time. You look like you have a great truck, mine is in hibernation.
