If you get an email from jalopyjournal.com, do not open the attachment unless you are expecting it. We are having a problem with folks ghosting our email addy and even using like copy in the email... Sucks.
Thanks for the heads up Ryan...have any of you got the fake Ebay and Pay PAL emails?some are almost undetectable...I never answer any of them -just go to their site and contact from there.
Yup, this new one attacks from the ISP's addresses and others like Jalopy Journal's. If you haven't updated your anti virus software yet TODAY , do it. There have been several nasty new ones this week. Don't open any attachments from ISP addresses or .com, .net type addresses till you update your antivirus. Wouldn't it be great if we could send say 10,000 amps back down the line to the pricks that write this crap! Then you could find them by the smell of the dead burnt body melted to the keyboard.
Don't open anything from me. DiggerDave got an email supposedly from my @aol.com email address that had a virus attached. I never sent it. I normally use the PM features here and at the RRT so if anyone gets an email from me don't open it unless we've "talked" previously about me sending you something.
NO SHIT!! I got 3 ebay-phishers today alone. A couple of months ago I got em from paypal, but I dont use it so I thru em away. Two weeks ago I got one from my ISP and was fooled and filled in some info but not all, it bounced back saying 'fill in all fields' and I got suspicious and tossed it but not before I'd put a credit card number and my ISP password(what an effing idiot!). I just called the credit card company and no fraud YET, but gave em notice and then changed numbers, and then contacted the ISP and changed the password. The cyberworld is not for the meek and innocent. I want my mommy...
I keep getting a mail from a "bank president" in Nigeria wanting me to sign for $2,200,000. Yea, right... like I'm going to fall for that!
YOu know that Nigeria scam is actually the country's largest industry and income earner. Over 5 billion I think, it was in the paper a few weeks ago
[ QUOTE ] I got a spoof/virus e-mail using MY ISP's e-mail addy!! [/ QUOTE ] Me too, and I use yahoo mail!!! duh... DON'T... CLICK... ON... ANY.... ATTACHMENTS! These things are engineered to get you when you aren't paying attention. Kinda like a motorcycle cop hiding behind a billboard...
I have PCToolWorks AntiVirus Expert installed on my computer - cost about $15.00. If I get an email I am not expecting, I can scan it from my tool bar without opening the attatchment. Right now, I am getting ones that have a familiar subject line, like "Your Bank Account" and have "Read this attachment" or "For your approval" in the body. The ebay and PayPal scams are almost undetectable but remember that neither ebay nor PayPal will ask you for personal information in an email. Best thing to do is send the email, complete with the header to spoof@ebay.com. The one I get most often is that "Your Account Has Been Susspended" because of unauthorized activity! Sadly, these people have nothing better to do than try to mess up your computer...Tom
To begin with, a Mac can't open a .exe anyway so most of the viruses out there are a non-deal but If I get an Email with an attachment that doesn't automatically open in the mail , like gif's or jpg's I don't open them because they should have. Sometimes I will write back to a sender to confirm they really sent something before opening it. I forget, can cookies be virus or spam magnets?
Yes they can. Lots of them are there to track what you're interested in to send you related pop-ups or put you on related spam lists. Cookies are a good tool gone bad.

I have recieved FIVE virus updates in the past TWO DAYS!!! (automatic updates from Norton)
[ QUOTE ] I keep getting a mail from a "bank president" in Nigeria wanting me to sign for $2,200,000. Yea, right... like I'm going to fall for that! [/ QUOTE ] DrJ, just for giggles I sent back totally incorect information to see what would happen. (my computer "hides" behind TWO fire walls!) The assholes had the nerve to reply and tell me there was no such account!!! I have lost count of the number of times I receive that Nigerian scam come on!!
It seems that some members here on the HAMB that have gotten emails from me over the last few days with strange attachments. (supposedly containing a VIRUS) The sender address shows "dave @ nesstronics . com" ; I DO NOT USE THAT ADDRESS TO SEND MESSAGES! I HAVE NOT SENT ANY EMAILS TO ANYONE HERE ON THE HAMB WITH THE EXCEPTION OF DENISE, av8 OR carps!! If ANYONE ELSE gets emails from the above address, with any kind of attachments with it; DON'T OPEN THEM!! THEY ARE NOT FROM ME! And it is possible there is a VIRUS in the attachment.
[ QUOTE ] I got one from myself this morning! It was from webmaster@martsrods.com Who the fuck is that? Mart. [/ QUOTE ] Mart, I have had a number of emails from "webmaster @ nesstronics . com". (I'm my own webmaster, and I haven't sent anything to myself!! ) As far as I know someone HAS a VIRUS and has your (and possibly mine) ADDRESS in their computer and is sending them out. I have had SIX updates from Norton in the past three days, and it has been showing that a virus(s) has been sent at least 17 times!! Three to "webmaster."
I've recieved them from 'Carps @ Nesstronics' and 'Hot Rod @ Carps.com', plus I believe a few people have got them from me apparently via one of the hot rod web sites I visit and strangely via sites I don't visit, so no need to be afraid it's your system. "Eddie the expert" tells me these things search the net looking for names and links them in such a way as to simply bomb people with crap that looks like it might come from people they know or at least have a common interest with. His best advice is to keep your firewalls and abnti virus software up to date and don't open anything unless you're 100% sure it's from a reliable source. If in doubt, chuck it out. What pisses me off more than the viruses is the frigging incessant SPAMing by morons trying to peddle generic frigging viagra. Somebody should blow those arseholes up!
