Thought it was time to pull the '39 into the pole shed for a nice winter's nap. But, I couldn't resist taking one last drive when the wife jumped in beside me. My 2 son's were also there, so I also couldn't resist laying a little rubber on the shop floor while backing out. 100+hp over stock, stock transmissions, & burnouts do not mix. Guess who has to rebuild a tranny this winter? And, who had to push the car into the pole shed? Please tell me that there is a time when we quit doing stupid things like this...

  7. Not far behind you GV and nope is the correct answer. Hell I'm building an A sedan now that 7+8 are almost against the dash rail just for driving when the weather is bad. LOL Of course its only about 400 horse so I am not totally adolescent. :D

When I was 17 I broke a camshaft. A guy in his 60s easy with a very fast J walked into my pit while I was grumbling about it and said, "hell kid if you ain't breakin' stuff you ain't tryin' hard enough." I am getting close to his age now and I am still tryin' real hard. Hell Mrs. Beaner still eggs me on. :D

Call it continously R&D. You need to find the weakest link and break it to make the car better. New car companies spend millions on this R&D activity, you're doing it for much less, so really you're saving money.

Isn't "doing stupid stuff" a synonym for educational?

  12. You mean stupid stuff like making old cars go really fast? Faster than they were designed to go? I hope I never outgrow that kind of stupid.

Breaking your shit inside your garage is the poster child for experience. All your tools are right there.

Plus, you're learning how to rebuild a transmission. Two learning experiences for the price of one.

I've been VERY grown up lately, it's fuckin terrible.

I have no ride at the moment.
Mt current OT project is wearing me out. I raised the bar on this build and the details and cost are slowing it down.
Next project will be simple, standard stuff, budget or spare parts build.

I wish you luck on your trans rebuild, don't let snowball into redoing other things while you've got it apart.

Just think about it as testing the tranny before you went out for a ride, how much better is it that it it broke in the driveway and not fifty miles from home

We break stuff all the time, get over it ;)

Stupid would be rebuild it and break it next year, again!
Upgrade and go out and brake something else, that intelligence for dummies! :-D

We never get too old to have fun, or learn new stuff! And you just learned something new, be happy. B-)

I'm 72 and still learning lessons the hard way. Nature makes you grow old but not up. When you heat something up to cherry red use a pair of pliers to pick it up the second time.

In the early 70's I worked in a shop in Waco Texas for JT Carpenter and he was famous for cutting something off with the torch or heating it and then reaching down and grabbing it while it was hot.

It could have been worse 1pickup, You could have lit them up real good and gone sideways and hit the side of the garage door opening. I didn't see that happen but saw the results afterwards when a guy I knew did just that.
