My pops is always dumping the clutch in his 350 powered/ stock tranny and rearend 40 sedan. I keep telling him your going to break it.
Actually, ^^^^ my ex wife would have walked away, cautioning my sons (5 of them!) "See what your father did? Don't ever act like that...Always have the smartness of women..." Man! Sure was glad to see her go. My life changed after that. '39 Ford clusters got hard to find...so did 1st & reverse sliders. (Ford scripted are the strongest, last one I put in was the last one I saw!) Cad-LaSalles were my next best choice, I rounded up a few of 'em. Oh, rounded up another wife, too. 13 years younger than me, but brilliant. And gorgeous. And she still likes me. Lets me smoke the tires, too. But she DOES give me "the look"...You know the "look"... the silent one... If that '39 has to keep that warmed over flathead, it might behoove you to find a '37-'48 Ford truck Hogshead from a 4 speed trans. Minimal machine work to make it an adaptor to a '68-'72 Ford top loader 3 speed with a Jeep tower, with 'real floor shift'. Gears are wider than the old LaSalles. And, it's full synchro. (even low gear!) Use PB Blaster on every nut a day ahead of time. Anybody ever read the text by Louis Banta on fitting the '39 Ford box with T-Bird gears? Clusters were only $59... (then)
I was a junior in high school....bought a 40 ford from a buddy who needed fast money..paid 8 bucks and the car had a 39 gear box with a stock flathead. Cruised it past my girlfriend's house and laid about 5 inches of rubber before the tranny expired..DOH! It pissed me off so bad I've never owned another one......helped change a good number of them for buddies but I won't have another early ford transmission. I drive too stupid.

NO. The project that I'm collecting parts for and hope to begin construction on this winter should produce around 400 horsepower and weigh less than 2,000 pounds. Will I act stupid when it gets on the road? You bet! (b-t-w; I'm 64)

The trans I grenaded was rebuilt by me. Followed the book. It worked great. I do have another case & the guts from a '46-'48 trans. I'm sure that's what I'll be doing this winter (along with several other projects). I'd consider an upgrade, but that also means losing the torque tube & stock rear. Kinda like my wide 5's & stock hubcaps.
I am just 60 and thinking about converting my 27 roadster to open drive, so it is easier to put the new shafts in the cyclone quick change, that I seem to abuse to brokenness! Gary
If you don't break shit then you'd have nothing to talk about with the other dummies except... "last weekend I polished my wheels". I've never been so lucky to break mine in the driveway though.
If you talk to my Xs, they'll happily tell you I should grow up and quit wasting time/money on that old car shit (not forgetting the motorcycles... ).... 'course, that's one reason why they're Xs. .... And before somebody says 'didn't you learn after the first one?' I'll note that I did... but each one was a unique mistake... ....

No, I get dumber as I age. We just had a new motor built for my Son Dan's rpu, a 468 Olds, and we were working some bugs out of it. Finally got the ignition and carbs working great and it now runs like it should. We took it for a test drive and Dan was thrilled at how it runs now, and he pulled over to let me drive. I pulled out on the road in low and buried the two fours. When it shifted into second the tires lit up for a second time, and more in 3rd ! I looked over and Dan was VERY quiet, because he never beats on it, and he was not particularly happy. When we got back he said he had never seen the tach go that high, and I told him "It's a hot rod, you have to beat on them once in a while, this is why we build them !!" I don't think he will be letting me drive his car any time soon. Don
Just remember, It's never to old to have a happy childhood. My wife thinks I might out grow this sometime but she doesn't know when.
Pictures lie. I painted this thing something like 30 years ago. HOK candy brandywine over gold base w/ apple red/tangerine/lime gold over silver flames. It's faded & scratched. Suspect bodywork showing through. Should be redone, but it looks like somebody pulled it out of a barn, washed it, & fired it up. I think it will stay that way. My original plan was to go with Chevy drivetrain, but I didn't have the money or the knowledge at the time. Now, it's cool again with the flathead & wide 5's.
I feel your pain, put a mercruiser 4 cyl. in my A,t-5 trans,stock rear and trailing arms. Running beautiful. One of my friends says"does it burn rubber?" I said I dont know lets see. bad choice. ruined rear,open driveline conversion,driveshaft,clutch, broke two ears off t-5. not to mention the embarrassment of picking up all my pieces off the ground. And the financial pain. I think I'm up to like $1500.00 in parts to get the old gal back on the road. As the song goes.............old enough to know better ........but still too young to care. Oh well at least no one was harmed physically in the making of this dumb ass event.lol.One last word, this was not a John Force Burnout. This was like 12-1500 rpm dropped clutch and gassed it. Just wanted to chip the tires. In spite of all this man does that A fly with that mercruiser motor. It has been warmed over a little also. Zips right up to freeway speeds etc. cant wait to get it going again.yruhot
Maybe, Just Maybe, you sliced the keyway in the rear axle,,? Could that be it? Can you still go thru the gears smoothly and the car doesn't move? "I am no gynecologist, but I will take a look !!!!"
