I like being in the shop working on the cars more than driving. There are two reasons for this: we keep really, really good beer in the shop, and there are way, way too many idiots on the road.

Insurance and plate costs for maybe two weekends of driving just never made sence to me. Bob

Yep, that's exactly it. The build and problem-solving is fun, but the driving is what it's all about for me.

I definitely don't dream of building all winter, I dream of driving!

Definitely enjoy the fab/create/build process more. I always have one driver at least it sucks to go to events car-less. The thing I dislike the most is car cleanup. Some bugs winter with car till spring for cleanup.

  7. <--- This project stretched over 8 years ( The old Time - Money thing !!)
I can't say I enjoyed all of it, but mostly I had fun creating parts out of bare material.. and I did learn some new skills ...and limitations..
However , now that its finished, I figure I get 8 yrs worth of driving enjoyment as a payback..!! I have a great time with the car..Makes me smile every time..

Then again, I do enjoy tinkering with it, maintenance, etc..Nothing heavy..

So overall to answer the question, Id say its a wash...leaning toward the driving side..

  8. Spend 30 to 50 hours in the shop a week , and love it . Always have a project going , 3 right now . All of it goes hand and hand .Always have a driver ready to go . As you get older it takes a little longer to get them done .

Shop time is the best time. No worries as to what's going to happen next. Maybe I need to get better at fixing what's wrong!

80% building, 20% driving, 0% clean up. Generally, I build 'em, put 'em in the back garage and build another one.

I fix late models all day and unlike the people I work with, I don't mind it. I like working on my old stuff and driving it pretty much equally. The more I spend time with the car, the better the car treats me. Wish it was the same with the wife.

Most of my projects are drivers in progress. I love working on them but get so excited about driving them I put them on the road before they are finished.

As usual I am going off in a different direction. Working on cars is fun, driving them is fun but the best part for me is meeting up with some hot rod friends and just hanging out. For me it has always been about the people.

  17. I've been out of the loop on building cars for awhile. I did spend about 20 years building a bunch of cars for myself and others. I enjoy the build more than driving, more friendships are developed on the build from parts suppliers to people interested in what your doing. Driving the stuff I built got me in trouble more than friendships.

  18. I think I am at the point where I enjoy travelling somewhere in a hot rod more than working on one. I have built several frame ups and worked on lots of friends cars and think I am just burned out. I feel I have one more car for myself in me. No more friend's cars. I have had my T-tub since 1980 and still enjoy working on it. It is the only car that affects me that way. I want to build a 47 Ford coupe hiway car to pull my holiday trailer and call it done. I don't know how some of my friends in their 70's still build them. I am 65 this year.

I enjoy building and working on my own stuff and also helping friends with their projects. Going to events and meeting up with old friends is also great. I guess I'm about 50/50.

  22. Yes I do enjoy working on them as much as driving them. I'm retired and it keeps me bizzy.

    my project...
