water pump is installed. but when cleaning out the lines i found that they were completely clogged with what looks like white Vaseline. what ? dose any one have a clue what that could be? also i had to fish so much metal out of the thermo housing an hoses an other openings as one the water pump has broken off in places then 2 the thermostat was broken an circulating in the coolant system. the bigger pieces stayed put in parts in the thermostat housing but the spring an ring i pulled out at the opening where the pump went on the motor. the bulk of the time was Reilly spent taking on an putting on the fan. what a tight squeeze between the radiator. an yes i did take my rings off this time. ill take photos of the water pump at the mouth where the hose connects was corroded pretty bad but so was the solid metal plate too. i didnt do so much on this repair as i wanted . russ didnt want me to hurt my hands (awweee how sweet) but i watched an took the opportunity to paint the fan an fan pulley while he tinkered on it. so if any one knows that the white greasy stuff clogging up the lines pleas tell me.
x2 on it probably being some sort of stop leak. You're probably gonna want to replace that radiator and the heater core.
If it looked similiar to this ,, its oil and water. Pay no attention to me flipping the bird , i wasnt happy lol. Stupid vortec intake gaskets
I agree with most of the above posters, what you are describing does sound like the oil is getting into the cooling system. Time to pull the dipstick (if it hasn't already been done), and see what the oil in the pan looks like. If the dipstick has the same white (or baby poo brown) substance clinging to it, your water and oil are mixing, and you're going to need to find out the cause. A few (of many) things that can cause what you are seeing are a cracked block, blown head gasket, aluminum part or housing cracked, or maybe just corroded bad enough to put a hole in it. Sounds like you found yourself a "helper" since I read an earlier thread, but my advice to that thread, to go over to slantsix.org, register, log into the forum, and post your problem in the engine section is still valid. These guys live and breathe slant sixes, they can, and will help you sort out your problems.
Could be everyone else is right, but before you give up on the engine, check to see if you have water showing in the engine oil. A little oil the coolant could be someone trying to mask or nurse along a failing waterpump. If the engine oil shows the same white foam on the dipstic or drain pan after an oil change than you have more serious problems. If the oil looks ok, sounds like you've already cleaned out the cooling system so drive it and see if more sludge appears it the coolant. One other caution if you try a chemical radiator flush it will probably open any leaks previously sealed with stopleak.
Yeah could just be a head gasket,,slant sixes are pretty hard to kill Is there antifreeze in it or just water ? If water and its been sitting,,the block could have cracked during teh winter months
If the car is from the SoCal area not too much worry of a hard freeze, maybe higher up like the San Bernadino mnts. I never heard were you found the car. You could have the cooling system pressure/ vacuum checked for internal leaks. A leaking Headgasket is a valid possibility especailly if it has a steal shim type gasket rather than a composite. Again check the condition of the engine oil first.
ok a update for you guys/gals interested,,,i helped with the water pump r n r,,the oil is ok,,no oil in water or water in oil,,i had it running with the rad cap off and i didnt see any oil or bubbles etc,,it seemed to me like it was the aluminum water pump corroding from the two years it was sitting,it did only have water and no anti freeze.the part that was clogged with the "gunk" was the hose from below the thermostat housing to the water pump,,im new to these motors so forgive me for not knowing the proper name for the inlet/outlet to which i refer..the rest of the rust seemed to be from the totaly rusted out thrermostat and the backing plate on the water pump as well as the spring in the lower radiator hose.we did do a "flush" with hot water, although it was only by pouring water in the thermostat housing,we didnt have a hose to put into it as she live in a apartment and there is no hose bib to use.im going to have her bring it by my place soon and flush it with a hose and possibly take the radiator to a shop and have it cleaned out. willys1950jeepster asked where the car was found,,it was found in chula vista but had came from la mesa prior to being found in chula vista. thanks to all who have commented and offered advise,,im trying to help out and get it on the road asap.its a learing process for me as i have only had experience with chevy 283's and 194's as well as vw's.any info is much appreciated thanks
could possibly be heavy condensation from sitting and lack of operation. Clean it out and monitor the fluids and temp. As stated its hard to kill the leaning tower of power.
yeah it never gets cold enough in san diego to freeze any thing. hell ive yet to ware any thing heaver than a hoodie here. there is no oil an grese in the new water just rust. ill have a proper flush done but i dont drive it any where i just move it every few days as to not get a ticket. im just gonna work on it with the help of russ1403. i like b n able to learn my self. hell ive always wanted to learn how so here s my chance . an ive been amazed at how easy it has been (for the most part. i wish my pops had showed me any thing. i know he seems tickled when i tell him what im dooing now . i need to get a temp gauge as soon as posable. ive looked at it an am pretty sure i wont even need help from russ on that one . i have this cilton guide so ill just look at it. but i already looked at the housing when i was takeing off hoses so ill do that monday most likely(thats when i can get to the bank first). i love how simple this car is. to hell with computers in your cars. .thanks once again for all the answers an info. im a slantsix.org fan
Not having seen your variety of slime I would believe russ1403. He is the eyes on the scene. Oil would look kind of like whipped frosting. Aluminum leaves something more like undercooked eggwhites.
The rust issue sound like heavy electrolysis from running straight water. Most all of the thermostats I have ever seen are made mostly of brass and should not rust. They will corrode due to electrolysis as well as the w/p backing plate. Not having seen the substance in question makes it a guessing situation, but it could be related to the electrolysis. If you are using the rest of the cooling system, make sure that everything gets flushed and back flushed very well. Use a good coolant mixture at least 50/50. The coolant is your best protection against electrolysis not just from freezing. Also make sure you have good clean ground connections to the block and frame/body, this can help slowdown the process of electrolysis.
nothing like that thank god,,it has clean water in it know,,lots of rust from the backing plate on water pump and thermostat and spring in rad hose,,its cool according to the "idiot" light,,soon i will help with a guage set to find out the real temp,,thanks
it was just the aluminum corrosion for sure,,after "douching" it out it is realitively clean now,,it will be monitored for "stuff" in the water before a good flush and some 50/50 is added,,so far so good
FWIW, sitting a long time if it's getting water in the oil the first oil change you'd get something that would make you think your engine has a case of the trotts, or someone put pudding in place of oil. Ask me how I know... anyways if the oil is clean and stays black I wouldn't worry much.
cool,,the oil is black and the "water" is "fine",,so far so good,,just needs a little more work to make it daily driver 'worthy",,,thanks everybody for the input,,im sure necro and i will be asking questions soon about other stuff,,its my first dart ive worked on and hers too,,,i told her to get a chevy ii/nova due to me having 2 of them and knowing alot about them but no she get sa dart,,oh well ill have to learn about the "leaning tower of power",,thanks all
heres a few pics of the water pump that i just got, now all who have responded can see what im talking about..
