I didn't buy or build any of my cars because I wanted attention. I did it because I wanted to own them and enjoy driving them. The attention is great and almost always enjoyable, as long as it doesn't get dangerous. But I would own them even if there was no attention.

    The attention is great!
You do get the occasional person who chimes in with " Nice Edsel. I had a 1953 myself" Idiots! 1958-1960:eek:

Sometimes I get annoyed but then all of the sudden someone will say I have a such and such at home. I've found that by driving old cars around you can come across alot of people that have all sorts of good old car stuff stashed away. Can sometimes get the ball rolling to get some good deals. I've scored a really nice 57 olds 2 Dr HT that way and also an old Indian Chopper. So....I guess you never know where the annoying gas station conversation may lead.

i don't mind the attention. though i guess with my car it's only the old people who say anything. i actually had an older woman, maybe in her 70's give me a thumbs up one day. i was laughing a smiling the whole time, thinking, she had a little fun in a back of a Caddy way back when

  9. If I didn't enjoy it, my truck would have a For Sale sign on it. I tell people that Henrietta averages "about 40 smiles per gallon." I like it especially when kids take on over it. I've got a little sign I put on it at cruise ins and shows: "Feel free to touch. It's just an old work truck, not a show car." My truck is lettered as a shop truck for Drake Motor Co., the local Ford dealer from the Model T days until 1956. My favorite comment was the old guy at one of our cruise ins that I overheard telling someone, "I remember when Drake Motor Co. had that truck..."

Usually it is ok, but sometimes it is truly memorable.

Not long after I got my roadster, I was giving a friend of mine a ride around the neighborhood. We turned a corner, and there was a kid standing in his yard, right near the street. His eyes got big, and you could read his lips: "Wow." Made my day, and my buddy that was riding shotgun remembered it over fifteen years later. Might have been what led him to his T-bucket......

  12. Not me Larry- I had a picture of a dead possum painted on my door as kind of a camoflage so it would blend in with the scenary. Nobody ever looks at it and that was my intention.

The attention is awesome! It is most important when I am at an event and people comment that they like the car - when it comes from car guys it just makes you feel like you did something right. Just to be clear, and I think many of you will share this view, I did not, do not build these cars to impress anyone. I build them for me to drive. The fact that people like my cars is just frosting on the cake.

I do have a gripe though. Why is it necessary for people to know "what year is it"? If you don't know but you like it anyways what does it matter? I answer this question far more than any others and I really do not understand. Please note that I am not rude to people, but I really do not get the "what year is it" routine.

It's OK. It's probably so that when they go talk to their friends and want to tell them about your ride they can say something like, "Man, I saw a sweet ass 19-whatever Ford". That way they sound a lot smarter than saying to their buddies, "Man, I saw a sweet ass...uh...red car...uh, it was old" :D

Since I haven't done anything to my car (that people can see) they usually ask me what I'm going to do with it. Which is cool. I usually say, I don't know, what do you think? It's fun to hear others ideas sometimes. Best one was when this 50 something lady that lives on my block (we've both been here over 25 years) was walking her dog past and said, "HMMM, that's a 53 Dodge, isn't it?" Seems there was one of these exact cars in her past.

I was thinkin the same thing! Boob jobs and cars both come with great responsibility! ;)

  16. The what year is it? routine is a way for people to try and figure out for sure the next time (I hope) they see one they may actually be able to identify the car a little better. This would please you right? If they knew something more then nothing.

well, i just read everybodies answers on this post and i must say, there are a lot of people with there egos in the wrong place.
when i was 15 to 19 i was into drag racing, which was more of a how fast can i make it kind of thing? i didn't get a lot of street attention.
then i got into bikes from 19 to 30 and that was a real ego trip. most straights didn't talk to long haired dirty bikers, so you didn't get a lot of ?.
i got into street rods from about 30 to 45 and that really was a lot of attention as you're well aware.
from about 45 to now 60 i have been back into drag racing. i get a lot of ? and such at the track but, most people know what their talking about there, with an occassional civilian wanting to know how fast it is? which i always think is an odd ? as they just saw it run!
anyway, the reason i got back into drag racing was, i got tired of all the ? from driving on the street. also my cars were always loud and noisy and fast anyway, so why not drive a nice comfortable tow vehicle and race the hot rod?
the car i have now, which i drove for 4.5 years everyday, is a full on straight axle, engine setback, big tired, hot, load and noisy, henry j gasser. i stopped driving it about 5 years ago (couldn't afford the gas, regs and ins) considering i already have 3 street cars that are more comfortable.
i also got tired of all the ? and the fact nobody ever wanted to go anywhere if it was more than 2 miles from there comfort zone (afraid of breaking down).
i have said all this to tell you i have a vw trike, a yamaha chopper and a t bucket, which just goes to show you, the thrill of driving this stuff outweighs the general publics ? and interest!!
once it's in your blood, you can never get over it.

There's a restaurant I go to quite often and usually drive one of my cars. Of all the cars, the one with the patina ('31 A) seems to get all the attention. One day, 2 girls are walking by and spot the '31. One girl starts to pose with the car while the other takes pictures. The "model" then rolls up the bottom of her shirt to show more skin. I tell my wife, "Jeez, they don't pose with my finished car ('32 3 window), they pose with the rusty one!". Go figure, cracked me up.

  19. I like the attention. The Terraplane is pretty stock, but still fun to cruise around in. My Coronet is much faster, and it's fun to drive too! The wife likes them, my kids can't wait until they get a chance to drive either of them (with me along, natch!), and they are FUN!

I had one too...how about "did you find drugs in the car?"
My Delorean was like a boat..the day I bought it was great..the day I sold it was even better!

People either loved that thing or absolutely hated it. Neat car but what a pain in ***. Sad thing is I would probably buy another one someday..thats how sick I am:(

It's pretty annoying most of the time, every time I hear one of those "my dad had a new one..." stories I just want to step on they guy's face and get back in my car because he's making me late telling me lame stories about when 57 chevies were used cars. Everybody has the same thing to say about an old car only in different words and none of them have a clue.

  22. I love it, I also like some of the suggestions I've gotten about details I could add.

The attention is fantastic especially for an old fart that never get's a second look otherwise.
However I could do without the fools that follow too close or cut in front of my car to take a second look. Some of you guys have modern brakes but my cars have all carried original drums! (please no lectures!) And it is hard to bring 4000 lbs of steel to a stop from 60 mph when you least expect it!

(But I did drive a '59 Edsel for years and I got fairly sick of the stories of how crappy Edsels were - nothing like telling a man his daily driver sucks!)

  24. I've always had fun with the hot rod and vintage cars I've owned . I like to meet people and make connections with other motorheads . I even got a marriage proposal while driving my Allard . The best one ever was the Daimler Ferret MK 2/3 shown in the thumbnail below . I met maybe 10,000 people driving that , and that was the first week , then the second week ....... Well , you get the picture .

p.s. Check out the fox in the turret . She went to two Goodguys events in it with me .

The best ever! This September on the Garden State Parkway, (serious cop land), on the way to Fall Wildwood, a New Jersey State Trooper pulls up beside me. You know how they just kind of cruise along side and check you out before the lights go on? Finally after about two blocks I get a big smile and a thumbs up. Then he just takes off. How cool.

Also one night on the way back to my house, I did'nt know it but a Pennsy trooper was in the right lane when he spotted the roadster. I made a left into the development where I live and he about rolled the big Ford to turn in after me. He followed me home, all the time I was expecting a bust for something. At my house he pulled up outside my drive and asked to check out the ride. He's building a '37 and had some questions. He knew his rods and was pretty cool to boot.

My last cop attention story was this year at fall Wildwood when a Wildwood cop left us park our three old skool roadsters in the bus zone right in front of the Doo Wop Museum. The pictures under the classic neon were stunning. Since he had to sit across the street during the concert anyway he volunteered to watch the cars during the show for us. True to promise they were nice and safe when we came out! He brought his family up on the boardwalk the next day and got some pictures of his kid in my car. Way cool.

My 9 year old son has brought every kid in the neighbor hood down to see "my dads roadster" I think the kids reactions are the best, and they usually dont ask stupid questions...

My Terraplane is not your every day car. I've used pentastar emblems for parking lights also third brake light so I get alot of, what year Chrystler is it or somebody walking past says, there is your classic old Chrysler. I guess the Road Runner decals I have on the cowl, just for fun, don't help. About 90% that is not T plane is Mopar.

For the most part it's great. Like the kids waving and smiling, and the surprise when some little old lady or man smiles and gives a thumbs up. Don't mind the people at gas stations asking questions, or wondering what it is.
Only negative things are when the drunks or homeless guys want to ask stupid questions, and I just want to get away from them regardless of what they're asking.
Or when I'm in the driveway tuning or tinkering and people stop at the house to come and look and bother me while I'm trying to get something done. I'm always afraid of the people who might have ulterior motives for looking too, as I'm not sure if they're checking it out to come back later and steal something or just curious.
At a cruise last Sat. I left to look around and when I came back the older gentleman next to me in a 40 Ford PU was explaining to people what the car is. He was doing a good job, so I left, and every time I came back he was explaining things to someone new. Pretty funny, but I felt sorta bad for all the talking he had to do!
Far more fun and good parts than the occasional bad though.

My Edsel draws attention, more than my 66 mustang. I get a lot of "what is it?" and "I haven"t seen one of those for years". But my favorite by far was from an older fellow. He asked "Is that your dad's car?" I had to laugh!
