Wood actually wasn't "good" enough for Henry. He would replace every accessible, vernacular technique or process with an exclusive, capitalization-dependent one as soon as he himself was technically and financially able. Thus he was resolutely headed to more sheetmetal presses and fewer carpenters.

Most of the technological history of the automobile is about making it impossible for ordinary people to make cars. The technological history of hot-rodding is about pushing back against that, especially as regards making fast cars.

Personally I'd like to see even more wood in a car than was common c.1930.

On a Hot Rod I prefer steel. With a stock subframe and a flatty or a banger, I ‘m sure wood is fine. In my channeled 3W and my zee frame “A” coupe , I used 3/16” plate bolted in place in the passenger area and welded in the trunk area. Kinda my idea of a blow proof floor. They have both been in place since the late 70’s/early 80’s with no troubles .

My 30 A Cab still has all the wood subframe, but everything else is steel. Replaced the door wood with steel, and covered most of the subframe with 18ga steel.

Wood is quiet and doesn't transfer heat. Leave it.

    In a early car I prefer wood. I used Baltic Birch, 1/2"-9 ply. It's strong, stable,and reduces heat transfer. HPIM0902.JPG HPIM0903.JPG HPIM0904.JPG DSC02597.JPG DSC02596.JPG

I would use wood floor. It’s quieter and safe. Company I worked for had 1” plywood installed under floor boards of our COEs after a clutch exploded and drivers foot near severed

I replaced my '28 Tudor's floors with metal; the wood was too hard to weld.

We use wood in our early Chevys of course, but we skin the underside with sheetmetal and paint for a smooth, clean look.

I had an all steel floor installed in my 34. However, Henry didn't build it.....Alfred P. Sloan, and William S. Knudsen did. The rest of the wood is still there. About 90% of the original wood was still very solid. The bad parts were all in the floor, sub-rails, and door bottoms.

When the metal floor rusted out in a '59 Chevy Wagon I had years ago, I repaired it with wood!

Henry used so much wood in the 33-36 roadsters/phaetons that is very expensive to replace in wood. I use steel and like the ease of working and welding the doors and cowl areas. Wood deteriorates in open cars as steel does not.

I put a wood floor in my 36 Chevy pickup and I talked to a guy about spraying it with bed liner to seal it .

In the 70's when I worked at Kodak we had a wood salvage where I found all kinds of great pieces for car and home projects. Our favorite was the pieces of PlyMetal (plywood with sheets of metal on both sides). It was easy to work with, strong and ended up becoming the choice for floor pans in some of the streetrod projects we worked on.

Wood is even popular in OT vehicles. I found 12" diameter piece 1" plywood sealing a hole and while acting as a rear body mount on a nissan truck. I was not overly surprised:D

Since I'm a welder and there was absolutely nothing for a floor or even subrails in my T body when I started I went with all metal.
And I also made the floor panels and part of the transmission tunnel removable for service.

I also replaced some of the floor wood in the cargo area but kept the wood on the back of the rear seat where it folds forward to extend the cargo area in our Ranch Wagon

It was originally covered by a heavy rubber mat but we decided to go back with carpet. HRP
