I think hearing Jalopy from an older fellow is way cooler than hearing some nobody punk kid call my cars "Rat Rods"!! I usaly ask the Honda driving fools that call my 38 a rat rod if they'd like to race my rat rod. That does the trick for the most part.

If you were really that offended, maybe you are just as stuck up as you think he is?

I wouldn't worry about it. I've had a lot of different cars in my life and people and myself, have called them hotrods, piles, streetrods, racecars, dragracers, old iron, turds, vette's, ****boxes, heaps, leadbuckets, s****heaps, dogs and probably many more.:D

Why worry about it, it's all good. I'm more the type that will look/smile/wave/thumbs up at just about any cool ride. We're all car nuts, with different choices/tastes in rides. Today I have a vette and a 56 chevy, next time, who knows. Think about how you've gone from lowrider to g***er or custom or cl***ic or hotrod through the years. If we were all the same, all the time, it would be boring.

Have fun and enjoy your rides.

You can call me or any of my vehicles anything you want. I'm not gonna take it personally. I personally would be glad to take him up on his offer to run my *jalopy* with him and his corvette club buddies. I think at the end of the day, they would be thinking twice about who actually owns a jalopy...christ! even my DD is pretty stout...

  12. even in its best running shape a 1980 vett would clean my clock at the strip
its a pre war 4 banger hot rod
    all ford stuff
    nothing newer than 36
but i bet i will get more people looking at it than his 2002 stock zo6
i will go, maybe i can get some restoration work from the guys who dont work on their own cars
it was just the way he said it and the smerk on his face that set me off. like he was looking down on me for having something different

Jalopy is Kool!!, unless you have so much $$ in your ride and think it is on some special level. if bored, check out 1953 Movie with Bowery Boys called "Jalopy". If really bored, search for definition of Jalopy at Wikipedia Encyclopedia, etc - funny stuff.

  14. Jalopy is a compliment in my way of thinking. He could have called it the R word that would have been an insult.

The Ol' Man called the real go fast or go to hell rods jalopies when I was a kid. Perhaps they werte not considered to be as nice as a chromed out show rod but they were the real deal not just to look at.

Post a picture and if I like it I'll call it a Beater, that's what my generation called Jalopies.

Driven more than polished that's where its at friend.

my granpa raced for many years and won a great deal of track championships, races and so on......ALL of which were for a cl*** of cars run in the midwest on dirt ovals called "jalopies". if someone referred to one of my cars as such, it might be the best compliment it ever recieved.

My T-Bucket has been called "that cute little car, dune buggy, rat rod, jalopy, kit car" and probably a half dozen other names i can't recall right now.

Who gives a ****? Life's to short to worry about what a someone else calls my car.

You could use this to your advantage. Tell him you were offended by his comments and that you are thinking about going with another company unless he sweetens the deal. But Jalopy is better than the "R" word. Then ask him about his AMT, or Revell, or Monogram....but he wouldn't understand that plastic slam either. When someone uses the "Rat" term, I try to use it in a positive way, to teach them a little. Gary

If jalopy really bothers you, you could refer to his vette as a "plastic pachyderm".......

To me "jalopy" is just a term that means hotrod. Nothing negative about it. Like others have said. Just take your jalopy and go spank some purebread Vettes.

I don't take offense to anything you call my car.
Now, being an auto mechanic all my life, I do take offense to the term "grease monkey". It's like our N word.

I learned to let this stuff kinda roll off my back by telling myself, "they're just uneducated to the ways of real hotrods." Can't get upset every time someone makes a stupid statement, when you consider the source. Now when real car guys make dumb statements, then I can correct them.
